Last week I replied to a comment that I am going to let this season play out and see where the writers take Matt Passmore’s irreverent, irrepressible homicide detective, Jim Longworth, before I decide if I would hang out in The Glades another season. This week’s episode brought me a little closer to remembering why I willingly follow this cop into the Florida swamps to solve murders.

There are times when the storyline of the central characters enhances a show’s main focus, and times when it distracts viewers from it. “Gibtown” was unfortunately a bit of the latter. The sharp banter, clever dialogue, and bait-and-switch techniques that have been this show’s draw from the start were shadowed by the triangular angst between Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore), Callie Cargill (Kiele Sanchez), and Samantha “Sam” Harper (Natalia Cigliuti).

The chess match begins anew between Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) and Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) with this latest caper. The themes of choice and identity are gaining in strength, leaving viewers to wonder where this tightrope the characters are subconsciously walking will lead, and if we’ll like what we see when we reach that destination.

In the sophomore year of this police drama, “murder is back in season.” But it’s not just the episodic crime mysteries coming across the desk of Homicide Detective Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore) keeping viewers tuned in; it’s the chemistry and shifting dynamics of the police department in Palm Glades, Florida. A captivating cast led by Passmore’s cocky yet charming Longworth entertainingly bounces through personal drama and case-triggered tensions.

In the most entertaining episode yet this season, the natural partnership between Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) is showcased from an unexpected angle: Peter Burke, undercover bachelor on the prowl.

In the third season of this intriguing procedural, the tagline “choose a side” has never been more appropriate. After the first season of getting to know as much about the characters’ backgrounds as The Powers That Be allowed, season two settled a bit into the ‘buddy’ formula. We got comfortable with Neal Caffrey being a reformed con artist who works with the FBI in an unlikely but appealing partnership with one of their best agents. But the explosive second-season ender tilted our axis and we’ve entered this season with a new game board.
