Air Date: Thursday, October 23, 2013, 9/8c on The CW.

RATING:

“You dig around in people’s minds, you find that everyone has a sad story.” – Cara

The Tomorrow People turns inward to look at the troubled lives of young teens. The hidden stuff—what we don’t see, and can’t hear. It’s hard being a teen, especially when you don’t feel you have anyone you can turn to, when there’s no one in the world like you. The writers take on tough subjects and handle them with expertise in “Girl, Interrupted.”

Observations and thoughts:

There's so much we didn't know about Cara.

There’s so much we didn’t know about Cara.

To go from silence to unrelenting sound has to be hard for a young girl. Who knew what demons Cara (Peyton List) was battling? “Sucks, doesn’t it? Knowing what’s inside other people’s heads.” What’s odd is Stephen (Robbie Amell) can almost relate to finding out they can do something different, that they are different but in a good way. Cara definitely isn’t like other girls. I think her being deaf helped tune her telepathic ability unlike any of the other Tomorrow People (TP). “Sometimes my powers work a little too well up there. I can get overwhelmed by all the news and I have these … episodes.” She can get into anyone’s head without even trying. You know it’s overwhelming to her yet useful. My question: why does she have to verbalize her thoughts instead of telepathically conveying them to Stephen?

John (Luke Mitchell) and the other TP seem to be bigots against us simple Homo sapiens. “We do not help humans.” I get the problem with engaging with the world when having super powers. But here’s the thing—the TP aren’t aliens. They had to come from somewhere, right? We’re all born. The TP aren’t hatched from eggs in some lab somewhere. John’s hatred stems from somewhere deep though. I’m guessing we’ll find out just what that is soon enough. We’ve gotten Stephen’s story, and now Cara’s. We’re making our way through the group and it’s pretty interesting.

How exactly does Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino) “take away” someone’s powers with a shot? You can’t change genetic disposition with chemicals, can you? I get this is a fictionalized TV show but I’d like some realism to what’s going on.

Stephen shouldn't keep Astrid in the dark.

Stephen shouldn’t keep Astrid in the dark.

We know Jedikiah is a prick with a one track mind, but he can be right sometimes. “Because what happens if by using your powers to help this person you accidentally reveal to the rest of the world that there’s a new species living amongst them?” Good question. But you know that doesn’t stop Stephen. He cares. He isn’t one to stand by and let bad things happen. The boy just can’t help himself. I think his interfering with the lives of others is going to get him in trouble one day.

“I’m on to you, and if you don’t want to tell me the truth, I will go figure it out for myself.” Astrid (Madeline Mantock) sees something she shouldn’t and doesn’t appear to be willing to let it go. I think that’s great. This is probably the best development for Stephen. He’s being offered what he wants on a platter: having someone he cares about know his secret. He wouldn’t have to hide or lie to Astrid about what he can do. So what does he do? He lies anyway. Does he not understand what it means to have a best friend who would still stand by you, even through the impossible? If he doesn’t watch his step, he’ll lose her. I don’t think he can afford to do that either.

Random thoughts:

Why do the TP always end up being the only people on a subway car at the same point every night? This isn’t The Midnight Meat Train (you have to check out this movie to get the reference).

When faced with danger, why don’t the TP teleport? They engage the enemy and fight. How about just blinking away before getting caught?

Why hasn’t the TP’s underground bunker been discovered by anyone? Ultra is supposed to be so technologically advanced. Are you telling me they haven’t tried looking below street level to find the rogue menace?

How cool is Agent Nichols (Met Golding)? Or should I start calling her Darcy? She’s fierce, tough, and I don’t think she’d cave to Jedekiah like other agents have. Do you think Stephen could sway her from Ultra’s clutches?

Memorable and funny lines:

Agent Nichols: “Take off your shirt.”

Stephen: “Excuse me?”

Agent Nichols: “Biometric transmitter; it only works on bare skin.”

Stephen: “OK. You could buy me dinner first; I don’t even know your name.”

Agent Nichols: “Yes, you do, it’s Agent Nichols.”

**

Cara: “Being a telepath is like being a psychic antenna.”

**

Jedikiah to Stephen: “I can’t tell if you’re being sadistic or self-serving.”

**

I wonder John keeps hidden from his past.

I wonder John keeps hidden from his past.

“Girl, Interrupted” takes us into the life of yet another one of the TP. I like the sneak peeks into the past we’ve been getting each week. Usually with a new series, you don’t get to see where the main characters come from, you only see who they are now. Learning about the ‘human’ lives of the TP makes a difference in my enjoyment of The Tomorrow People. I care about these characters and look forward to seeing where they’ve been and where they’re going.
