We're So Close To Finding The Killer! Review: The Killing "Donnie or Marie" 1

Is Mayor Adams involved in some kind of cover up?

Ah… so there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to solving this murder. I swear, every time we take a step forward… well, you know. Now we have to think about the severity of Rosie’s (Katie Findlay) murder. Being beaten and locked in a trunk left to drown, is cold and takes a certain amount of rage to commit. The bloody keycard found last week points to someone from Councilman Richmond’s (Billy Campbell) camp, so Holder (Joel Kinnaman) asks, “Donnie or Marie?” With what we know and have seen regarding Gwen (Kristin Lehman), I wouldn’t put it past her. Although at this point, I still don’t think we’re being shown the whole picture.

Observations and thoughts:

Mamma Bear Mitch (Michelle Forbes) is home again and that’s a good thing. She’s trying to finagle a way back into her role as mom and Terry (Jamie Ann Allman), for lack of a nicer way to put it, is getting in the way. It’s awkward when two women live in the same home and this case is no different. Terry’s been running things and feels a kind of maternal protectiveness over the boys. She knows her place, but I think it would be difficult for her to slip out the door quietly to let her sister get back to things as usual. Not only does Terry’s grilled cheese take precedence with the kids, her mouth runs and she lets things slip that might clue Mitch into what’s been going on while she was gone. “You don’t have a family, you don’t have children, you don’t know what it feels like.” While that may be true, Mitch, Terry was stuck doing your job. You can’t exactly expect her to just shut her feelings off, can you?

I'm not sure how I feel about Mitch's return. It's good but in a way it's bad too.

I’m not sure I’m buying the whole murder-a-teenager-for-political-reasons excuse for Rosie’s murder. I don’t understand what could be so important to warrant killing someone’s kid in such a slow and unjustifiable way. She was cruelly murdered—an if it’s because a new casino could be built, a land transfer to the mayor, or some other bullcrap like that, I’m calling bullshit. I could see if a message was being sent to ‘not screw with the land on the island,’ but who would have received it? None of the players we’ve been introduced to so far seem afraid to go to the Wapi Eagle Casino, nor is anyone shying away from the mayoral race and its candidates. There’s gotta be some explanation that’s gonna blow me away. Please, someone tell me there’s something awesome on the horizon?

Did you notice the rain falling right after Councilman Richmond’s poll numbers are revealed? Then, of course, he receives a mysterious phone call that could mean anything. Like I said last week, the rain clouds the picture. There’s something we’re supposed to see and it’s not coming through too clearly. I’m beginning to pay attention to the rain and exactly when it falls. Just another one of my crackpot theories…

Stan (Brent Saxton) gives Mitch a good and sound verbal lashing. I don’t think she intended to upset him by alluding to her loving Rosie more because she’s her mother, but her point is clear. She’s Rosie’s blood while Stan is not. Does that matter when it comes to love though? Why can’t a parent in name and actions love a child just as much as a biological parent? Who’s to say love is only as true as the blood that flows through one’s veins?

What will Linden do once this case is over? I'd like to see her get her life back together.

What’s up with the intimidation tactics Linden (Mirielle Enos) and Holder have been using lately? They aren’t hitting people where it hurts, but where it matters. One thing’s for sure, they aren’t giving up on finding Rosie’s killer. They won’t let anything deter them from their goal and I’m concerned someone will realize Linden isn’t on suspension and the jig will be up.

Memorable lines:

Gwen to Councilman Richmond: “I tried so hard for you. We came so far, Darren.”

**

Linden to Holder: “What if Gwen and Jamie did it together?”

**

Stan to Mitch: “You cannot come back here and say that you love Rosie more than I did.”

**

Councilwoman Yitanes (Lee Garlington) to Holder: “Oh, and here I thought you were just a slice of brainless beefcake.”

**

Gwen to Holder and Linden: “And if you continue to harass me or anyone else involved in this campaign, I will have you shoveling reindeer shit at the Christmas parade. Do I make myself clear?”

**

I’m sorry but if Jamie (Eric Ladin) is the murderer, I’m gonna be pissed. Why watch the season finale then, right? It won’t be him. He may have been at the casino, he may have even been in the room with Rosie, but I can’t see him going after her. Now Gwen on the other hand, she’s scary and a bit unhinged. Plus, after looking at the clip for next week’s episode, the figure chasing Rosie looks like a female. Of course, I could be wrong but I just don’t see the connection or the point to Rosie being killed to stop her leaking information of a political nature. I’m not into politics though, so I don’t know how serious these things can be. What would be wild is finding out Rosie’s death was accidental. Maybe she locked herself in the trunk of that car and someone drove it into the lake… ok, so maybe not. I’ve no clue but I’m dying to find out once and for all who killed Rosie Larsen.
