“You ever think about who you’ve killed?” – Tara

The Walking Dead (TWD) knows how to open an episode. Water logged walkers fill the screen as voiceovers set the stage for what is to come. Our group of survivors is on the hunt for “something they need.” Will they find it? And when they do, will they get what they need, literally and physically?

One Hell of a Fracas

Well, how far do you think Sasha will make it?

Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) isn’t dead (and is one hell of an actor)! Now that I’ve spoiled the entire episode, let’s get down to brass tacks. “You can help me run this place one day.” I know we are supposed to hate Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) but I can’t seem to bring myself to do it. There is something about him that makes me want to know more. I want to get his motivation for seemingly being the biggest jerk on the planet. As an aside, I had a conversation with another fan of the show who said something that shocked me but I kind of agree. I asked the age old question of the role reversal between the Saviors and the Alexandrian group. What if we met the Saviors first and followed their story, would we hate Rick and the group? The other fan said the Alexandrians are just as bad as the Saviors. They kill, take what they need, and seem to run over the weaker people they come across. But I disagree. I don’t think the two groups are anything alike because Negan makes people kneel in his presence. That takes on a whole other level of psychosis when you think about it. Who does he think he is? A king? At least Ezekiel (Khary Payton) knows he’s playing a part to keep people safe. Negan is playing his part to keep himself alive, fed, and protected.

Rosita (Christian Serratos) might have been surprised at Eugene’s (Josh McDermitt) reluctance to be rescued because she didn’t get the full disclosure Sasha receives. I think Eugene makes a damn good point, and he isn’t stupid. He’s fallen in with a group that will keep him alive for the foreseeable future. He doesn’t have to be afraid anymore. Why would he want to leave? Who does he have to care for him now that Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) is dead? Eugene is the ultimate survivor; I respect his game.

Maggie missed her opportunity to end Gregory. Hopefully, it won’t bite her in the butt.

How about Gregory (Xander Berkeley) looking like he’s going to kill Maggie (Lauren Cohan) one second but can’t even take out a walker in the next? What kind of leader is he? He’s nothing but a coward and even worse than that, he needs a pregnant woman’s protection. Damn shame, if you ask me. Gregory couldn’t have solidified Maggie’s role at the Hilltop any better if he had planned it. “Thank you for your help.” I’m not sure he means this but he owes her more than a simple thank you.

Last but not least, Tara (Alanna Masterson) makes a hard choice and goes back on her promise. I can’t say I blame her. My question is what took her so long? Tara should have tried to gain the support of the Oceanside group a long time ago. If she had mentioned the Oceanside group when she first got back to Alexandria, it might have made a difference. I get it though; Tara “promised” and didn’t want to put those women and children in any further danger. So does taking their weapons and exposing them to outside forces make the situation better or worse? Will the Oceansiders come out of their secret camp to join civilization or will they turn into the Scavengers?

Interesting Quotes:

Negan: “You’ve got some beach ball sized lady nuts on you coming in all kamikaze like that. Big question here and I need the truth on this one: Rick put you up to this?”

Sasha: “Rick? Your bitch? No.”

Well. Sasha knows how to play her part and Negan is obsessed with balls. I wonder why that is when he has numerous wives.

**

Negan to Sasha: “You can use that knife and stop ol’ rapey Davey from becoming dead/alive rapey Davey. Save yourself. Join the cause. I know what I’d do.”

See, Negan makes me laugh without even trying. This situation isn’t funny but I appreciate the humor he finds in it.

**

Tara: “My friends are out there right now and they’re going to take this place, hopefully without firing a shot.”

Doesn’t sound like a good group of people, now do they? Good thing we know better.

A formidable force or a mistake waiting to happen?

I’m excited to see things have gone better than I thought they would. Negan is still breathing but we know that is only a matter of time. Let me know what you think about “Something They Need” by dropping me a line in the comments section below or tweet me @ellemoe.
