RATING:

“I need to see Damon, Luke, and I’m not asking.” – Elena Gilbert

Time jump a few months and The Vampire Diaries (TVD) is back in action with a drug addicted vampire, a ‘missing’ vampire, and a really hungry vampire. Bet you can’t guess who’s whom. “I’ll Remember” is nothing short of depressing when it comes down to it.

And the Ban(d) Played On

Supe pow-wow. Will they put an end to what ails Mystic Falls?

Supe pow-wow. Will they put an end to what ails Mystic Falls?

The supernatural gang is banned from Mystic Falls and stuck in a grief cycle. While everyone is essentially “alone,” suffering in their own way, no one really deals with the issues at hand. So I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s odd a vampire is mourning the death of another vampire. Vampires are dead. Technically, they are the undead, but you get my drift. The immortal beings can’t handle death, the finite, or mortality. Isn’t that why Mystic Falls was once overrun with vampires? Because you just can’t let nature take its course.

Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) and the Travelers have left their mark on Mystic Falls. Vampires can no longer enter the town and it’s a good thing. Kind of keeps supernatural creatures at bay for a while. There are too many damn vampires on this show. I know, ‘vampire’ is in the title but so is the word diaries, and we get very little of that, if any. I don’t miss the insight Elena (Nina Dobrev) gives regarding her so-called deep thoughts on what’s happening in her world. In fact, I’m happy to see the writers have moved on from that and are branching out into new territory. But I have one question: if magic is absent from Mystic Falls, does that mean witches will be powerless there as well? Is that why Luke (Chris Brochu) and Liv (Penelope Mitchell) aren’t in a rush to leave school to try fixing what’s wrong with Mystic Falls? I don’t know. I kind of like the idea of a town where supernatural baddies are forbidden. Of course, it won’t last but it’ll be good for a while at least.

Random Thoughts:

Yeah, I'm not used to seeing this side of Tyler. Not at all.

Yeah, I’m not used to seeing this side of Tyler. Not at all.

The opening to “I’ll Remember” made me laugh. Usually, when a couple is together and something suspicious happens, the guy will go check it out. Oh, but not with these two. “You go check it out,” she says. You go check it out,” the guy retorts, and guess what? She does! Either she’s an idiot or a strong woman who doesn’t need her guy to protect her. Either way, I chuckled at the two not wanting to step out into the darkened night, knowing anything could be waiting for them.

Ghost Damon (Ian Somerhalder) isn’t enough for me this week. Elena gets the quick fix she needs but Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon have breakfast like all is well in the world. WTF? So the bright light at the end of season five was a teleport to Mayberry? I shouldn’t complain because we could have come across Damon and Bonnie in eternal suffering or something worse. I’d like to see them doing more than just existing though.

I love Caroline (Candice Accola) and everything Accola does with her character. But I’m not even remotely impressed with Caroline’s current role in TVD. Since when is she the fix-it girl? Why isn’t she her usual bubbly self? Possibly because Stefan (Paul Wesley) is out of the picture and off wallowing in self pity is my guess. I’m waiting for Caroline to get back with her true love Tyler (Michael Trevino) *not really* and continue avoiding her feelings for Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Yes, I’m still waiting for that ship to sail.

Funny and Memorable Lines:

Matt might be the next Hunter. What do you think?

Matt might be the next Hunter. What do you think?

Jeremy to Matt about his lack of motivation: “No more magic means I’m no longer a Hunter.”

So, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is relegated to mere human status again, and Matt (Zach Roerig) is what, upset?

**

Elena: “Technically, when we met you were dead.”

Damon: “Good point because now I’m just … gone.”

Anyone else find this remark disturbing?

**

Alaric to Tyler about Liv: “As the only sober person here, trust me when I tell you this, Tyler; that girl is so not into you.”

Warning or push in the right direction? Tyler and Liv do seem to have that I-hate-you-but-want-you thing going on.

**

Final Thoughts:

“I’ll Remember” isn’t the best season premiere but it isn’t the worst either. I’m getting used to having Alaric (Matt Davis) back, even if he bores the hell out of me when he’s teaching. But what do the writers have in store for him? He’s a vampire now, leaving a lot open for his story arc.
