The Originals –“Live and Let Die” Top Three Moments. All’s Well That Ends Well.

“What are you fighting for?” – Cami

The Originals doesn’t hold back as it ventures into the psyches (or psychoses) of the Original family. I’ve never come across two parents so hell-bent on offing their children. Something remains to be said for Mikael (Sebastian Roche) and Lenore/Esther’s (Sonja Sohn) determination. They do not give up when an obstacle arises. They do not fall to the ground weeping when things don’t go their way. No, these two parents regroup, re-plan, and reevaluate how to commit murder. Talk about an interesting family reunion.

A heart stopping moment. Literally.

Moment #3: Cami hasn’t fallen off the face of the earth. Not my most favorite character but it’s good to see Cami (Leah Pipes) is still in the game. She’s been MIA for one reason or another. I’m guessing the plot doesn’t contain anything detrimental to her appearance. The thing is, Cami is the key ingredient for keeping Klaus (Joseph Morgan) contained. While she’s not the blonde vampire he desires, Cami is the closest thing to reminding Klaus of the woman he loves. And Cami has a role to play in the supernatural world order. Her heritage leaves her with a responsibility she isn’t yet ready for, or willing to accept. I think Cami having a soft spot for Davina (Danielle Campbell) will change that though. I’m most interested in Vincent’s (Yusuf Gatewood) interactions with Cami. The two have a great rapport though I’m sure Cami has no idea of his true intentions. How will she react to learning who Vincent is and what he wants from her? Again, Gatewood shines as the reincarnated Finn, making him appear almost human when interacting with Cami.

Moment #2: Someone finally accepts their duty as vampire babysitter. I know Elijah (Daniel Gillies) has his doubts about becoming a vampire mentor again, though he has to know his duty is to his kind first. He takes to the role of teacher like a fish to water. I think he even enjoys it a little. Gillies excels most when he takes upper hand in a scene. Leading his character to a place where obedience is required sets him apart from the other actors in a scene. Elijah doesn’t stand for a blatant disregard of his instructions; it is why he and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) have hit a bump in the road. I think having a purpose will set Elijah straight again. He’s lacking focus now that he has no one to protect. While I’d rather not see him so close to another woman, the chemistry between Elijah and Gia (Nishi Munshi) is in your face. Can anyone explain to me why Hayley interrupting Elijah’s teaching session feels more like she’s walking in on an intimate moment between a man and his woman?

Moment #1: Seeing Mikael deliver his parental guidance to Davina. Well, I thought Mikael was an a-hole before but watching him with Davina definitely ups his not-so-nice factor. As Davina says, “No offense but your dad sounds like a jerkwad.” Well, now we know where he gets his parenting skills. The strange thing is I happen to like Mikael. I know, it seems inconceivable, but I do. He is tenacious when it comes to getting his point across. His role as a parent has been to raise his children to be as strong as possible. He abhors weakness of any kind, especially in those he loves. So I don’t expect him to be sweet and gentle with Davina, yet I don’t expect his callousness either. “Remember, magic only fights half your battles.” Roche does an excellent job of putting fear into anyone watching The Originals. You don’t want to disappoint him when he tells you to do something. Roche chips away at the mystique surrounding Mikael by revealing the tiny shred of humanity remaining in his character. Mikael isn’t a heartless bastard. He does care a fraction of a bit for his family. He cares so much, in fact, he’ll put them in their graves to bring them peace. I want Mikael to stick around for a while. He’s the only true foe Klaus has and I enjoy their scenes together. I only hope Davina doesn’t get hurt in this ordeal. The hatred between father and son spans centuries and there is nothing one witch can do to stop them from wanting to kill each other.

Memorable and funny lines:

Elijah yells for his brother and Hayley answers with: “You do realize that literally everyone here has supernatural hearing, right?”

Davina: “You don’t look so good—those bites.”

Mikael: “Werewolf venom is to be purged by force, not acquiesced.”

Davina: “What is that, like a Viking bumper sticker?”

Great comeback, Davina!

Elijah and Mikael to their pupils: “First lesson, always be on your guard.”

It seems Elijah hasn’t forgotten his father’s teachings. I wonder if Davina will take heed to what Mikael says as well.

Final Thoughts:

Elijah always knows how to make an entrance.

With Elijah stepping up to play mentor to baby vamp Gia, Marcel rebuilding his vampire family, and Klaus trying to murder anyone who pisses him off, this season of The Originals continues to get better with every episode. Davina, Hayley, Cami, and Klaus have their work cut out for them. Lenore won’t be going away as easily as they might think.
