The Originals S2Season 2, Episode 3

Air Date: Monday, October 20, 2014, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“It is times like this that I’m glad I never really knew my mother.” – Hayley

The Originals takes a look at how strong a mother’s love can be for her son(s). Mother’s can be overprotective, yet also want their children to be independent. It’s a tricky balance to achieve and even an Original mother has trouble pulling it off. “Every Mother’s Son” examines the nurturing bond between a mother and her children, taking a look at how hurtful too much love for one son can create sibling rivalry.

I only hope Finn doesn't do any body hopping. Loving Gatewood in this role.

Moment #3: Discovering Finn has been a momma’s boy (and a creep) from day one.

I don’t think I realized Finn (actor not credited) was the oldest of the Mikaelson boys. I always thought Elijah (Daniel Gillies) held that title and responsibility. But, in one of many flashbacks we see the entire Mikaelson brood, and Finn is not only the tallest, but the most devoted to the kids’ mother. The look on the young actor’s face is doting, as Finn hangs on Esther’s (Alice Evans) every word; the closeness with which a reincarnated Finn, better known as Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood), maintains when in the vicinity of his mother; it’s all a big fat red flag. As an aside, I’m digging Gatewood’s vibe. He approaches Vincent’s persona with a cool and charismatic edge. You never know what Vincent is going to do next but you know he’ll do it with subtlety. I’d rather see this kind of Finn, than the quietly-do-momma’s-bidding-like-a-zombie Finn any day.

Moment #2: There was a seventh Mikaelson child?

Did anyone else know this? Klaus (Joseph Morgan) easily spills the beans on what might have been a take to your grave family secret. Esther’s psychosis is linked to the death of said child, Henrik, and his father, who just so happens to be Klaus’s proud papa, as well. This has to weigh in on how screwed up the Original family is. No wonder Klaus wasn’t jumping for joy at becoming a father. Knowing Mikael (Sebastian Roche) murdered Klaus’s biological father because his bio dad killed his stepbrother … geez! Try saying that five times fast.

I hope Klaus gets a chance to prove himself worthy of love.

Moment #1: Klaus really is the red-headed stepchild.

Esther appeared to always favor Klaus over the rest of her children but not for the reasons one would think. I was sure a young Klaus held his mother’s attention because of her love for his father. But Klaus’ flashbacks to his childhood show otherwise. Finn was always by their mother’s side, even when she didn’t realize he was there. Can you say creepy? It makes sense to me now that Esther felt a certain way toward Klaus because of his secret supernatural essence. I often wonder if Esther’s hovering over Klaus was out of love. Klaus was born out of a union forged by love, so naturally I believe his mother looks at him and sees the special part of the man she truly loved. Klaus dashes my romantic hopes when he realizes his being partial to the werewolf gene would have revealed his true paternity had he succeeded in killing anyone. Maybe what Klaus says about his mother is true. She doesn’t hate her children; she hates herself for what they are. She created them, made them the “monsters” they are today.

Random Tidbits:

Although they take on secondary roles, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) both make their presence known. I’m not sure what Hayley will be doing in the near future, as she doesn’t seem to stay with her wolf pack. I guess a queen can rule from anywhere. Now Marcel, he really impresses me. Not only is he planning to rebuild his vampire family, he’s trying to help Elijah regain some of his humanity, so to speak.

The link between Elijah and Marcel is a vital one. We’re just getting to see how important their bond is, and what it means for Elijah and Hayley’s relationship. I love how Marcel sees what people need without having to look to deep. I think Hayley knows something is off about Elijah too, but she has no way to fix it. She’s too busy trying to fix herself to do anything but survive day to day. Tonkin and Davis are stepping up their game.

Memorable and funny lines:

Klaus: “Bloom’s off the rose I see.”

Hayley: “Shut. Up.”

Klaus’s astute interpretation of the current state of Elijah and Hayley’s relationship is hilarious.

**

Elijah: “I’m looking for a cooperative witch.”

Marcel: “I don’t know where Davina is, and given the fact that she’s got your father on a leash, I wouldn’t put her in the uh, cooperative category.”

Elijah: “Not Davina. Perhaps another witch, on another leash.”

Marcel: “What makes you think I got another witch?”

Elijah: “Perhaps the daylight ring on your new librarian.”

I love this banter. Nothing gets by Elijah. Shouldn’t Marcel realize this?

**

Klaus reveals a sensitive tidbit to Hayley: “You know my siblings used to tell each other she didn’t hate us; she hated herself for what we’d become. I think I believed that even after she tried to kill us all.”

**

Final Thoughts:

This is an interesting pair. Can't wait to see what comes of this partnership.

I enjoyed “Every Mother’s Son.” I do have some concerns that Esther’s endgame will overshadow the other relationships on the show. I’m along for the ride and loving every minute though.
