The OriginalsSeason 1, Episode 20

Air Date: Thursday, April 29, 2014, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“The truth is, Marcellus, family can be more than just those with whom we share blood; we can choose.” – Klaus Mikaelson

The Originals doesn’t shy away from the subtle. What a touching opening scene in “A Closer Walk With Thee” where we see a side of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) I thought we’d never see. He’ll be a great father and a loving man to whichever woman decides to give him her heart. While I’d like that woman to be a certain young college student, I can see where the writers are going. Family remains a major theme of The Originals and it’s more evident now than ever. Fathers and their sons … good thing Klaus will have a daughter to dote on.

Remember the Time…

Cami needs to watch her step with Marcel.

Cami needs to watch her step with Marcel.

The flashbacks are blowing my mind. I can’t tell if they belong to Klaus or Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). The director pans the camera to each of their respective faces once a trip down memory lane is complete. Just who has more regret between the two? And since when do vampires have nightmares? I know why Klaus is thinking back on the old days, but what about Marcel? I’m even more curious about him now as I can no longer put my finger on his motives. He wants to reclaim the city but I think he also wants to rekindle his relationship with Klaus. They were like father and son at one point; that’s been sullied to the point of no return. I have hope Klaus and Marcel will kiss and make up. I want them to stop fighting. Nothing good comes from war. Not even a vampire war.

Random Tidbits:

Monique (recurring guest star Yasmine Al Bustami) really stands out from the crowd. She is the first of the sacrificed witches to return to the living. I wonder if she feels special or set apart from the other girls. Too bad she’ll be put in her place sooner rather than later.

I almost feel sorry for Genevieve (guest star Elyse Levesque). She’s caught up in something she wants nothing to do with, and is caving since the Mikaelson brothers are pushing at her from both sides. Apply enough pressure to anything and it’ll crack. Genevieve better be careful or she’ll break into so many pieces, no one will be able to put her back together again.

Cami (Leah Pipes) has been dealt a crappy hand. She’s handling herself pretty well though. I don’t doubt she is smart enough to figure out what’s going on around her but I worry she’s looking to the wrong person for help. Marcel always has something up his sleeve and Klaus is no better. But whom can (or better yet, should) she trust?

A picture of things to come.

A picture of things to come.

Does a pregnant wolf get superpowers? Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) seems stronger than she’s ever been. She’s tossing guys this way and that, banging down doors like she rules the world. I’m impressed. I remember when I thought she was nothing more than an annoyance. She’s stepping up and taking charge like a queen should. And I’m not mad at her for going after her man! Elijah (Daniel Gillies) would do anything for her. I believe we’re getting to the point in the story where we’ll find out just what that is.

Memorable lines:

Klaus rants about what ails him with a witty quip: “We will find and punish whoever launched the attack on the Bayou, and you will return to the compound for your own safety. But right now, I’m gonna finish this bottle and the next in the hopes of drowning the demon who has chosen today to haunt me. Cheers, Mikael, impeccable Freudian timing!”

**

“Well then, what better way to punctuate a day of peace than by killing someone?” Klaus never misses a chance to unleash his deadly smile along with a death sentence.

**

Elijah: “Please tell me you’ve designed a stronger method to control the witch than playing hard to get.”

Klaus: “I’ve always been partial to the classics.”

**

Cami to Marcel about why she’s still pissed at him: “I’d like to say I slept on it but I didn’t sleep. I stayed awake all night next to the body of a hexed priest, only to attend a funeral filled with vampires.”

**

Marcel to Cami: “Kieran and I had our ups and downs but we trusted each other.”

**

Marcel: “It’s hard to find a needle in a haystack when you don’t even know what the needle looks like.”

**

Klaus: “I bloody hate funerals.”

**

Final Thoughts:

I don't think Mikael will be going anywhere for a while.

I don’t think Mikael will be going anywhere for a while.

Doesn’t everything always come back to Davina (Danielle Campbell)? Now that Mikael (Sebastian Roche) has managed to make an appearance from the never-never and has his sights set on her, what does that mean? Davina isn’t the all powerful witch she once was. What does this girl have that none of the others possess? And can she stay out of trouble for once? Will Klaus, Elijah, and Hayley be able to live under one roof? This isn’t a love triangle but Klaus has a tendency to want to mark his territory where Hayley is concerned. And just what does Marcel have planned next? I’m dying for the next episode. I’d love to know what you think about the disintegration of purgatory and what that means for all supernaturals.
