The Lottery is finally getting us to the point of the series. The who, what, where, when, and why is being explored. While not all of these things are being revealed right away, we can already guess most of the mysteries begin and end with one man. You know him, the suspiciously evil, yet paternal, Darius Hayes (Martin Donovan). *whispers* I so did not see that coming.

I smell trouble.

I smell trouble.

Moment #3 – Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner. The reading of 200 names is boring as all get out but it’s also suspenseful and exciting. Waiting to see who would be called next has its appeal. Then I realized, I don’t know these women. The Lottery writers must have known we’d feel that way so they place the focus on two special candidates. It’ll be interesting to learn about these two young women, Perry Sommers (Karissa Lee Staples) and Angela Maria Perez (Christiana Leucas), who are both looking for a change in their lives, even though they have different reasons. Now, the other winners … I get that these women are heading toward something great but I smell something foul afoot. The women won’t get the special treatment they think is coming to them. I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll become prisoners in their own bodies. “200 cows, 100 picked. Let’s face it, Perry, you ain’t exactly the mothering type.” Nice. If there were ever any thoughts these women would be treated like human beings, think again. They are little more than broodmares, gearing up to be watched, controlled, and probably done away with once they’ve given birth. As an aside, why are they wearing white? Are we channeling Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale?

Poor James. Does he realize what he's getting into?

Moment #2 – Kyle Falls Off the Wagon … Hard. I didn’t think I’d ever see it happen but Kyle (Michael Graziadei) decides to give up custody of Elvis (Jesse Filkow). I never expected Kyle to give up the good fight but he knows when he’s defeated. Of course, the entire custody hearing is a waste of time as the results are obvious. The scenes are moving, heartfelt, and hopeful at times. I’m always rooting for Kyle, and I truly thought his plan to get Elvis back would work. I’m sorry things are turning out this way but Kyle is the guy who does what needs to be done in order to help his kid. With that in mind, Kyle must be working on some type of covert op to get Elvis back. Right? Seeing him in a bar sitting in front of a glass of alcohol hit me like a punch to the gut. While we don’t know if Kyle takes the plunge, he’s definitely standing on the edge of the pool getting his toes wet.

Moment #1 – Darius, the New Lord Voldemort. How did I not see this coming? Of course the head of the Department of Humanity is behind everything. Not just some things but everything that has gone wrong in the entirety of this series points back to Darius. I don’t know why he’s turning out to be the bad guy but he’s got ‘asshole’ tattooed on his forehead. But then you see him with his daughter, and the other shoe drops. He’s not the man we think he is. There is more to Darius than meets the eye, yet we have no idea what he’s capable of besides murder, deceit, and always getting his way. I think Vanessa Keller (Athena Karkanis) better watch her back. She’s smart but not as smart as Darius.

Do you think the First Lady gets an embryo too?

James (David Alpay) and Dr. Alison (Marley Shelton) are onto something but we don’t see much of them in “Crystal City.” Oh no, this episode focuses on the actual lottery finally coming to fruition. I don’t think it’ll be what anyone expects, and that’s going to make the remaining episodes even more exciting. What do you think about this week’s episode of The Lottery?
