The Originals Season 1 PosterSeason 1, Episode 9

Air Date: Thursday, December 3, 2013, 9/8c on The CW.

RATING:

“As vampires, we feel more deeply than humans could possibly imagine.” – Klaus

The Originals is living up to its potential. I continue to enjoy each new episode as it reveals something new about the Original vampires and their personalities. “Reigning Pain in New Orleans” shows us the ties that bind a family together isn’t always blood.

Observations and thoughts:

One big happy vampire family? Not!

One big happy vampire family? Not!

“Trust me, it ain’t over yet.” Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is not giving up that easily. He must know something the rest of us don’t. Is he planning another coup d’état or is he simply biding his time? I like seeing Marcel in the main seat. He doesn’t flaunt his power; it is a part of him just as much as being a vampire. It also doesn’t hurt that Marcel and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) are great together. I see now why they had such a great relationship. I think Davis and Morgan have great chemistry and work well together. They make me smile when they collude and act as vampires. It’s almost a rush to see how enigmatic they can be.

“How can I sire any hybrids if there are no more werewolves in the Bayou to turn?” Klaus is always going about things the wrong way. I want to fault his lack of knowing what it means to have a true family. Instead of winning over the masses with trust, loyalty, and compassion, he turns to manipulation to get what he wants. It never works and he never learns. Hopefully, he will learn how to treat people before it’s too late.

“You think this is funny? Messing with my mind? My sanity is not a joke.” Cami (Leah Pipes) is the real deal ‘don’t mess me’ chick. I love her character. She’s feisty, won’t give up like a dog with a bone, and she will beat Klaus at his own game. I used to worry about her getting mixed up with the vampires, but not anymore. I’m curious why the writers chose Cami out of all the women in New Orleans to be linked with Klaus and Marcel. Yes, it’s quite convenient her uncle plays a part in the human/vampire relations, but I’d love to know where this will lead. Will Cami truly forgive Klaus once she fits all the puzzle pieces together?

Joshua (Steven Kreuger) has made a friend in Davina (Danielle Campbell) and I quite like the two new besties. They both are so young and naïve due to their lack of being out in the world. They need one another. They need to have someone they can trust who doesn’t have an ulterior motive. I think Joshua just might be the only person who doesn’t want anything from Davina. The writers have given her an ally—though one of little power—to give her presence on the show meaning. Otherwise, why is Davina still around? She’s out of danger and barely sees Marcel anymore. He has no real use for her. I’d like to see her break out on her own and return to her former life. She is only 16, you know.

Random thoughts:

This one girl could cause a war.

This one girl could cause a war.

“Don’t see you care about much, it’s kind of hard not to notice when you do.” So … Marcel noticed what we already know. What will come of this new information? I think the same can be said for Elijah (Daniel Gillies) with his Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) infatuation.

I don’t think I realized how funny Rebekah (Claire Holt) is. She cracks me up with every witty comeback and scathing remark she throws at her brothers. I don’t know where the show would go without Holt’s comedic timing. I guess it could get boring with the boys and their stupid games. Thank goodness for the strong female characters the writers have given us.

Memorable and funny lines:

Marcel to Rebekah: “I ambushed him; tried to bury him alive. He’s not going to trust me.”

**

Rebekah to the movers taking a piece of furniture she loves: “Absolutely not! I paid for that.”

Elijah: “Please, you’ve never paid for anything in your life.”

Rebekah: “I hardly see how that’s relevant.”

**

Marcel: “You compelled her to go out with me, didn’t you? (to Klaus) And I thought you really liked me. (to Cami)”

Cami: “So did I.”

Klaus: “Well, I mean to be clear, I only compelled you to give him a chance; anything you felt for him was quite real. And for the record, the level of awkwardness we’re all currently experiencing is entirely genuine.”

**

Rebekah: “Do we look like a bloody vampire rescue squad?”

**

Elijah: “You can go now. Perhaps I’m not making myself clear. This is a threat.”

**

Klaus to Hayley: “I’m trying to keep you safe; not that you appreciate the effort.”

**

Can Elijah take down Klaus?

Can Elijah take down Klaus?

Gillies steal the show by doing what he does best: ooze cool and charisma. I don’t think Elijah can be any scarier than when he remains calm and issues a threat. Yeah, the Original sibling is slowly creeping his way to my number one spot. I didn’t think anyone could usurp Klaus when it comes to charm, but Elijah is doing a damn good job. I’m sad to see the mid-season finale come and go but I know when The Originals returns in January, it’ll be well worth the wait.
