Suits “Quid Pro Quo” Recap. Setting an Example. 1

Mike meeting with Craig.

Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Mike (Patrick J. Adams) find themselves at a loss when their class action suit hits a snag. Not only is their case against Velocity in jeopardy, Mike’s chances of becoming a legitimate lawyer once and for all hang in the balance. Will Mike and Harvey find a way to see their deal with Craig (Michael B. Silver) through, or is Mike’s dream of practicing law again finally put to rest?

I don’t know about you but I’m ready for the Velocity storyline to come to an end. Harvey’s arrangement with Craig, to manipulate Velocity’s stock in exchange for clearing Mike’s way to becoming a lawyer, is getting way too complex. Between the legal clinic’s involvement and Velocity CEO James Palmer (Scott Lawrence) pushing back, the heart of the story has become so clouded and impersonal at times, it’s hard to keep track of all the moving pieces. Was I the only one caught off guard when Robert (Wayne Best), one of the workers involved in the class action suit, suddenly shows up? I’m embarrassed to admit, I’d totally forgotten there was a human element to the lawsuit.

For years, we’ve watched Harvey walk a fine line between right and wrong. Truth be told, Harvey’s crossed that line more times than he’d care to admit. Despite being used to Harvey making questionable decisions, “Quid Pro Quo” is the first episode to make me uncomfortable while watching Harvey’s behavior. I don’t like the strong arm tactics Harvey uses on Holly Cromwell (Zoe McLellan), the headhunter/possible hooker with dirt on Velocity and Palmer. I especially didn’t appreciate dragging Rachel into the whole ordeal. The days of clever legal maneuvers to get Harvey and Mike out of a jam have apparently been replaced by blackmail and extortion. Instead of celebrating Mike’s possible return to Pearson Specter Litt, I found myself disappointed in the lengths Harvey goes through to pull it off. If Mike does make it back to the firm, at what cost will it be? Wouldn’t it be ironic if Harvey ends up in jail and Mike winds up becoming a lawyer?

Given all Harvey has been through since Mike was first incarcerated, I wish the writers could have found a way to bring back Harvey’s shrink, Dr. Agard (Christina Cole), who we last saw in “Faith.” She could have helped shed some light on Harvey’s thoughts and emotions.

Benjamin working on “The Donna.”

I’m still on the fence about Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Benjamin (David Reale) partnering on their pet project, “The Donna.” Rafferty and Reale have some fun chemistry together and their scenes provide some levity to an otherwise heavy episode. As a fan of the character, I love that Donna’s able to have a storyline that’s not tied to Harvey or the firm. That said, I find the whole concept of “The Donna” silly at times and wonder where the storyline is going. Watching “Quid Pro Quo,” I couldn’t help but wonder if Donna is contemplating stepping out from Harvey’s shadow by leaving the firm sooner rather than later?

I was thrilled to see Wall Street trader Stu (Ian Reed Kesler) in “Quid Pro Quo” as he returns to hear Donna’s sales pitch. I didn’t particularly care for him when he was first introduced in “Back on the Map” because his language was so out of place with the rest of the series. Over time, though, I’ve grown to enjoy the lovable big mouth. Hopefully, the writers will continue to find ways to incorporate Stu into the storylines.

Together again?

Meanwhile, Louis’ (Rick Hoffman) relationship with Tara (Carly Pope) continues to be the weak storyline this half of the season. Sure, they make a cute couple but other than Mike and Rachel (Megan Markle), Suits has never fared well when it comes to relationships. It’s not that their relationship is bad or not believable as Pope and Hoffman actually have good chemistry together. I enjoy how Louis’ knowledge of Mike’s situation before he was arrested comes up. Plus, while the moral implications of their relationship are interesting, they’re not enough to sustain me. I’ve yet to see how Tara brings anything to the overall scope of Suits and find myself bored any time the two appear together.

With Mike’s hearing almost inevitable, it’s hard to believe the lead prosecutor, Assistant Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office Anita Gibbs (Leslie Hope), wouldn’t have something to say about it considering she’s the one who put Mike in jail in the first place. Can things finally be turning in Mike’s favor or is another shoe about to drop? We will have to wait until next week’s season finale to find out what series creator Aaron Korsch has up his sleeve.

Greg Staffa

I provide testosterone to the site. You won’t be reading about how nice a actress looks in a dress or how much of a hunk Matt Bomer is in my reviews. I describe colors using words like brown, not taupe. My twitter name is @staffaroadtrip because I love road trips and have done two different 48-state road trips since 2008. My favorite show is White Collar.
