In a press release:
Los Angeles, CA (August 13, 2014) – In SPARK: A BURNING MAN STORY premiering Thursday, August 21stat 8 p.m. on SHOWTIME, filmmakers Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter offer a compelling behind-the-scenes look into Burning Man’s history and its ongoing evolution today. Through the use of captivating archival footage and in-depth interviews with the event’s co-founders, this 90-minute documentary explores the passion and artistry that goes into creating this iconic festival.
Each year, a week before Labor Day, Burning Man’s “Black Rock City” rises from the dust of an ancient lakebed (fondly referred to by the participants as “the Playa”) to become Nevada’s third-largest population center, an ephemeral metropolis with few regulations and no commerce. It’s a “pop-up” city of tens of thousands of strangers who unite around 10 Core Principles — commandments, if you will, key amongst them are “Decommodification,” “Participation” and “Radical Inclusion.” Along with the Playa’s harsh desert, its citizens, formidable infrastructure, ritual, art, music and technology combine to give Burning Man a community and culture like none other on earth.
