Russell Channels Hannibal Lecter and Jason Busts A Cap… Review: True Blood “In the Beginning”

Air Date: Sunday, July 22, 2012, 9/8c on HBO

RATING:

“The view from up here is spectacular.” – Eric Northman

The war between humans and shifters seems to be coming to a head. I don’t think one lone shifter can take on everyone who hates him, but he’ll damn sure try (or sniff them to death). While the Weres are the more organized among the shape-shifting group, they can’t seem to figure their shit out either. What will come of their inner turmoil and will that aid the vampires in ridding themselves of one foe? Vampires high on V will do what comes naturally to them—feed. Not only do they hunger for fresh blood, they gorge themselves and delight in the enterprise of hunting. So this is what Roman (Christopher Meloni) was so against… vampirism? Go figure.

Observations:

I always love the tender moments between Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Paquin and Kwanten have such an interesting chemistry with one another and you can almost believe they truly are siblings.

Now that Jason has a personal vendetta against all vampires, will Sookie join in his crusade to find the one who killed their parents? From the mini-flashback we got, I’m thinking the guilty party is none other than Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare), but I could be wrong. The thing is, Russell’s desire for Sookie’s blood could stem from his first introduction to her that fateful night, per the flashback, of course. Again, I still don’t understand how neither of her parents had that same magnetism to the vampire who killed them. Or could that be why they were killed? Will we ever find out the whole story since it’s clear Sookie wasn’t in the car when her parents were killed. And where was Jason?

Who knew Russell could sing too?! Loved this scene.

Guess I was right about one thing. Salome (Valentina Cervi) dug up Russell. The fact that Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) hadn’t figured that out sooner boggles my mind. I don’t know if it’s a misstep by the writers, or the natural course of where these characters are supposed to be going, but I thought a King and Sheriff would be smarter than that. All signs pointed to Salome, especially seeing how Russell was clearly not injected with silver and that stupid staking harness didn’t work. Come on, writers! Show us viewers a little more respect than that. As an aside, I think Bill is getting in over his head and might find out he isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.

Alcide (Joe Manganiello) is finally taking a stand and going after the job of pack master. Big fricking deal! His one reason for being involved in anything anymore is so he can go shirtless and growl. *insert wicked grin* So where will his story arc go now that he’s out to be top dog (har, har)? Does anyone care? His interest in Sookie seems to have been eclipsed and I can’t help wondering if Eric’s glamour is stronger than Sookie’s microwave fingers.

Lafayette’s (Nelsan Ellis) story line seems like filler. At this point, he doesn’t have any reason to be on the show. Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) is gone and Laffy obviously no longer works at Merlotte’s. Honestly, does anyone else work at Merlotte’s besides Holly (Lauren Bowles) and Arlene (Carrie Preston)? I know Big John (actor not credited) is holding down the kitchen, but damn! Even Sam (Sam Trammell) seems to be doing everything except running his business. I get his need to find out who is killing shifters, but the man has to keep a roof over his head too. (Can someone tell me why he’s acting more like a dog than a man? The rolling around on the floor was over the top. It’s degrading.)

I love Sam but the writers have got to do better by him.

Was there a reason to bring Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) back wearing that horrible looking wig? She’s not an old damn woman and she can’t honestly walk around with white gloves on all day, can she? That does not a pastor’s wife make. I guess it’s necessary for Tara (Rutina Wesley) to have closure and distance herself from her human life so she can move on and go forward as a vampire, but she could have done that without seeing her mother again. In fact, I think we all kind of forgot about her raving drunk of a mother anyway. The writers give us yet another pointless scene which could have been used to advance a story line, but didn’t. Give me a break!

Funny lines:

Jason to Claude (Giles Matthey): “…So if you can put it in terms a laid man can understand, I’d really appreciate it?”

**

Jason to Claude about Sookie losing her faery powers: “Well let’s just plug her in and charge her back up.”

**

Alcide: “Respectfully, Martha, your son doesn’t have a grave because ya’ll ate him.”

**

I am totally lost and clueless as to Russell’s part in The Authority’s plan, aside from killing Roman. Does Salome think she can keep him in line? I got a few laughs out of the vampires being high on vampire blood but other than that, what was the point? I’m not impressed with the introduction of the first vampire (if that’s what Lilith (actor not credited) is supposed to be) and the vampire division story line seems to be going nowhere. Let’s face it, if vampires kill every human they feed on, there’s going to be no more food. That should be obvious, right? Even Godric (Allan Hyde) came back to let Eric know that! I keep expecting to be wowed by the newest episode of True Blood, yet all I feel is regret and confusion. So why I am still watching? Why are you? Leave a comment here or drop me a tweet: @ellemoe. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
