Sookie getting a "reading" from Marnie

Portraying dysfunctional families is the one thing True Blood does well. I’ve never seen a father go after his son the way Jo Lee (Cooper Huckabee) does Tommy (Marshall Allman). For what? To subdue him for money? Why is this so important in the grand scheme of things? Will Sam (Sam Trammell) get involved somehow and finally be the brother young Tommy needs? It might be important for him to have Sam as a role model but I feel Tommy will influence Sam more than anything, just not in a good way.

So, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) has an epiphany: “Everything that’s ever got me in trouble, relates to sex.” Hmm… Maybe there’s something to that. I still don’t think his being repeatedly raped should be the thing to make him see the error of his ways. More importantly, what is he going to do now? I like that Kwanten tackles Jason’s new outlook on life with the seriousness it deserves; however, we’ve seen a new Jason already. What’s so special about this one?

Who came up with the idea for Gran to reach out from beyond the grave through Marnie (Fiona Shaw)? Sookie (Anna Paquin) wanted a reading but gets a warning from her dead grandmother instead. She uses her ability to read Marnie’s mind, hearing what the spirit (Gran) says as well. WTF? It’s an off the wall concept. I’m not sure I understand it but who’s to say the dead can’t communicate with the living through telepathy. It’s still unclear what danger Marnie posts to Sookie, but I have a feeling Marnie will eventually wreak havoc on those who mean the most to her. It’s only a matter of time considering Sookie is surrounded by vampires.

That inevitable kiss we were all holding our breath for between Sookie and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) fell completely flat for me. I was hoping to feel something more but it was lackluster. Eric’s been there all of two or three days and in that short amount of time, Sookie’s forgotten her hatred for him. No way! I don’t buy it. I just can’t help feeling I’m being fooled.

And Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) would never let something as important as Eric’s whereabouts slip. Even in her rotting state, she wouldn’t forget how crucial it is to keep his location secret. Wasn’t it she who ran straight to Sookie to beg her to hide him? Now all of a sudden she’s forgotten that and oops, lets it slip that Eric’s hiding across the way all along. Really?

Really Holly, you don't want to talk about what happened?

Observations:

Vampires don’t dream. Not sure why they would because they are dead.

Jason has a wicked sex dream featuring Jessica and Hoyt (Jim Parrack). How does that work? I thought the person who feeds from a vamp dreams about them, not their significant other as well. I get that Hoyt is Jason’s best friend and he feels some remorse, until finding out he’s having a dream. I guess his rape memories haven’t seeped that far into his subconscious yet.

Gators like marshmallows? I learn something every day, but what use is this little tidbit, unless I want to dispose of a couple of dead bodies. My question: how does Sam know that?

Oh, can someone tell me why Eric was asleep—at night?

I wish Bill (Stephen Moyer) would stop throwing in everyone’s faces how he’s a king. That doesn’t equate to “you must do as I say, or else.” I’m so over it.

Funny Lines:

Lafayette: “Hookah, you pissed off another goddamn vampire, and then you took a nap.”

Bill to Pam upon seeing her in a hat and veil: “Oh good, world needs more beekeepers.”

Jason, mimicking the voice of God: “Jason Stackhouse, you have fucked too many hot women. Now let’s see how you like it.”

Tommy to Sam on his going to hell: “It’s in the Ten Commandments. Don’t kill shit; don’t fuck with your parents. I did both.”

I can’t say I enjoyed “I Hate You, I Love You” much. It seemed off and quite frankly, boring at times. Even the return of Godric (Allan Hyde) wasn’t able to bring any excitement to the episode. I did like the special effects though—the vamps moving really fast and Marnie’s eyes rolling to the back of her head. Please stop ruining my show. At this rate, I don’t care to watch what happens next Sunday. And yes, I’ve seen the footage for the rest of the season. Can we get to the good stuff already?
