Review: The Vampire Diaries "The Reckoning" (Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Vampire Hunter? Klaus, That's Who.) 1

The gang's all here! Trouble abounds at Mystic Falls high.

This is by far the best fricking episode of The Vampire Diaries I think I’ve ever seen. All I can say is “Holy Effing Ess!” The suspense nearly kills me, waiting for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to show up to rescue Elena (Nina Dobrev) is inevitable, but seeing Stefan’s strength against Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was AH-Mazing! So much happens in this episode, I don’t know where to begin. Everything about “The Reckoning” rocks my socks! Tyler (Michael Trevino) is born anew; Matt (Zach Roerig) gets a taste of the other side; and Klaus gets a scare. Yes, you read that right. Klaus actually cuts tail and runs! So you have to wonder, just how deadly is this vampire hunter?

Observations:

I feel so much for Matt. He wants to be a part of the supernatural world like his friends. He doesn’t want to be on the outside anymore. He wants to be one of the gang again and I think it’s what’s been keeping him so introverted. And damn if he isn’t smart enough to figure out how to talk to his sister. But seriously, if he pulls something like that again, I’m with Bonnie (Katerina Graham), “As soon as you’re feeling better, I’m gonna kill you.”

I’ll admit to having very little concern about Elena being killed. She’s had Damon’s blood. She’ll just come back as a vampire. In fact, that might make me endear her more if she did. I’m tired of her being the damsel in distress. There’s a reason why I like Katherine (Dobrev) so much. She’s always in charge of herself whereas Elena needs to be rescued, told what to do, loved above all else.

“I promise you, I will never leave you again.” Damon’s words to Elena are touching but you know they will cause some friction. It’s not like Stefan is still in love with her or anything (Klaus took care of that) but the brothers are just that—brothers. I expect serious sibling rivalry to ensue in light of recent events.

I promise you will tire of hearing me talk about how much I love evil Stefan (Paul Wesley). The look on his face when Klaus calls him “Ripper…” seals the deal for me. Wesley is in his element as the vampire who relishes being a vampire. Emo Stefan is long gone and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. He kind of makes Damon look like an altar boy. Almost.

Now Matt can say "I see dead people."

Why is that doppelganger bitch wearing my necklace?!” I tell you, Rebekah (Clair Holt) brings serious comedy and excitement to each episode she’s in. She doesn’t try to be funny, it’s natural. I think the tone of her voice coupled with her sweet expression makes her appear innocent. But we know better, don’t we? She seems to be adjusting to life in the 21st century pretty well too. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her. She hasn’t taken on Katherine yet.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is by far the best vampire villain I’ve seen on television to date. (Seriously, Morgan was made for this role.) It’s his charisma—he can issue orders to kill someone in such a sweet way it makes you wonder why anyone would deny him. His swagger is intoxicating; his accent hypnotic; his dialogue so inviting you hang on every word and yearn for more. He is public enemy number one, and there’s only one thing—*cough* vampire hunter *cough*—standing in his way. Oh but won’t that be an interesting confrontation! You know Klaus won’t go down without a fight and Rebekah definitely won’t let him go at it alone. She is his sister after all.

Favorite lines:

Klaus compelling Stefan: “You will do exactly as I say, when I say it. You will not run, you will not hide, you will simply… just… obey.”

**

Katherine to Damon on going back to Mystic Falls: “You’re going to get yourself killed. The Damon I remember wouldn’t have been that stupid.”

Damon: “I wouldn’t have done it for you.”

**

Stefan to Elena about his being a Ripper: “I listen to the words coming out of your mouth and all I hear is the sound of your heart pumping blood through your body.”

**

The cliffhanger endings are major! I don’t even know what to say about what’s to come, just know that it will probably be something that we’ve never seen before. If I wasn’t hooked on The Vampire Diaries before, you can best believe it’s become my new obsession.

Oh, I know you didn’t talk about a sacrifice. I was using it as an example, because that was the only scenario in which she actually died, and also had vampire blood in her system (during the sacrifice). Of course, she didn’t stay dead because John bound his own life to hers, so it was like having a spare life protecting her own. I’d bank everything on Damon not doing what you described, because he actually wants to gain Elena’s affection. Recall in Season 2, that she was majorly angry that Damon went against her wishes. If you want to be with Elena, you have to let her call the shots, all the time. Even Elijah went as far as telling Damon that she would never forgive him for forcing her to become a vampire, and that eternity is a LONG time. Elena asserted that she didn’t want to become a vampire in “The Last Day” despite it becoming the only way to be with Stefan forever. I think this is a sign that the writers may try and devamp Stefan at the end of the series. I haven’t read the novels, which I hear are pretty bad, but I know that there is a way to become human again in TVD books.

I haven’t read the books either (but plan to) so I’m really curious about your comment that there’s a way to become human again. Do you really think the writers are going to give Stefan the option of becoming human? If anyone, I’d think they would choose Damon. He’s clearly in love with Elena and, as you said, wants to gain her affection. He also seems more in touch with his emotions but isn’t riding that Emo vibe Stefan was. Plus, Stefan’s the better vampire. He gives himself over to it unlike Damon. I say that because Stefan was the one to be turned first and convinced Damon it was the way to go to be with Katherine (if I’m not mistaken). Damon was more of the compassionate type when he was first turned. At any rate, I have no idea what’s in store, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I want Elena to be turned. She’d be more interesting that way. Right now, she bores me to tears. LOL.

Stefan is favored by the producers to be with Elena in the end, so yeah, I do believe that Stefan will eventually become human again. Stefan did tempt Damon to become a vampire by letting him see some blood, but you have to note that Damon had planned to become a vampire himself as he had been willingly drinking Katherine’s blood so that he could stay with her for all eternity. Stefan had been compelled to continue his relationship with Katherine after finding out about her vampirism. Damon only hesitated to turn because he thought that Katherine died, not knowing that she faked her death, removing any reason for him to become a vampire. But yeah, Damon is more in touch with his emotions and more stable than Stefan, which is why he didn’t become a crazy ripper. If Elena gets turned, it will have to be after she has given birth, or she will be devamped by the end of the series. There have been strong suggestions that the writers want her to be able to have kids (Either during the series or implied when the series ends) in Episode 20 of Season 2 and in John’s farewell letter (Episode 21 Season 2) where he hoped that Elena would be a better parent than he had been. For obvious reasons, I would rather she get turned soon and be devamped at the end of the series, because a child may result in unnecessary drama.

Your comment about Elena becoming a vampire if she were to die right now, is very off. Vampire blood takes about 24 hours to leave the system. Elena would only have become a vampire during the sacrifice if John had not let his life force get sucked to nothing in order to save her,

You know, I tend to forget (not really know what the hell is going on) about the different vampire rules in this show. But I think Elena is getting Damon’s blood on a daily basis. I think that because of the drink he prepares for her during this episode. I could be wrong, but I like the idea of his trying to protect her from death without her knowing it. And I wasn’t referring to any sacrifice so I’m not really sure what you’re referring to there. Thanks so much for the comment. I appreciate you taking the time.
