Review - The Vampire Diaries, Season 2, Episode 22, "As I Lay Dying" 1

Damon and Elena reliving a Damon and Katharine moment

The entire time I sat waiting for the season finale to begin, I kept thinking “there will be a cure for Damon and everything will be fine.” Boy, was I wrong. Not only were there surprises galore, there were revelations and a few old things brought back to light that I never thought we’d see again. As far as season finales go, this was a good one. But only at the end. I expected a bit more excitement throughout the episode and it seems the big punch of “OMG!” didn’t appear until the last few minutes of “As I Lay Dying.”

“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but … I need it.” Well you have mine, Damon (Ian Somerhalder). I think we know how much you care for Elena (Nina Dobrev), though she might not deserve it. I feel for him because he is the typical bad guy or the guy you love to hate. But we can’t hate him, can we? He cares so much for everyone in his life that he does stupid (read: things no one else will do) things to ensure they are protected. Should he be condemned for it? No. The only one who can condemn him is Elena and I think she’ll come around. How sweet is it that he calls her name while suffering? One thing that bugs me is Elena sitting with Damon, towel in hand, yet she never wipes the gallon of sweat from his face. Seriously, he was leaking like a sieve and she barely even dabs at the moisture on his brow.

Stefan is a real hero but no one knows it

“Sorry you’ve reached somebody who’s currently not operating.” Poor Alaric (Matt Davis). I know he’s hurting over Jenna’s (Sara Canning) untimely death, but he shouldn’t wallow. That’s not the Alaric we know. I’m actually grateful to Stefan (Paul Wesley). He comes through for everyone who needs it and he seems to be the only one who can. Wesley does a great job expressing Stefan’s feelings for his dying brother. As much as Stefan and Damon fight and bicker, you know they love one another, no matter what.

How exciting is it to see Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) again? Can you imagine the havoc Klaus can wreak and there’s no one to stop him? Looking forward to seeing what they plan to do. Okay, just Klaus. He’s not to be trusted, can’t be killed—he’s one of the originals. Super villain if ever I saw one. I kind of like that idea. I have to be honest here, I didn’t think Klaus would be the cure but it makes sense. He’s able to be both creatures at once. Why wouldn’t his blood be what Damon needs?

Klaus chides Stefan: “You do everything I say and I save your brother. That’s the deal.” Making a deal with the devil is never good, but in this case, necessary. Plus, I like Stefan when he’s not himself. He’s more like Damon. He’s more of a vampire.

Jeremy gets what he asks for this episode

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is such a tough wittle man *said in my baby voice*. He’s like a cute little kid whose cheeks you want to pinch. But he thinks his ring is a cure-all for him. I’m not sure if that’s smart thinking on his part. He should have been made vamp when the chance was given to him. I didn’t know there were limitations on the ring either. Nice twist, writers.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) is abusing her witchcraft. I think the consequences will be more than she can bear. She’s playing with fire and I’m waiting for the moment she gets burned. It’ll happen.

“As I Lay Dying” is aptly titled. We don’t learn a ton from Damon on his death bed, but we do find out he has regrets. I think anyone can relate. What’s important is Elena now knows how Damon feels for her. Although, I think she’s always known. I would like to think she wasn’t taking pity on him in his vulnerable state, but who knows.

“Oh, it’s okay to love them both. I did.” Does Katharine (Nin Dobrev) know how to make an exit or what? Next season is going to be a scorcher. Klaus has ignited the fire and it’s on a slow burn now. By the next time we see this motley crew again, it’ll be an uncontrollable blaze. Overall, this season has been amazing. It started off with a bang thanks to Katharine showing up and causing trouble. Of course, Isobel (Mia Kirshner) bringing the surprise factor to Mystic Falls was great, and it was all capped off with a big dose of Klaus the wonder vamp/wolf. Yes, season three will be the season to top them all.
