Review: Lost Girl - "Faetal Attraction" 1

Bo must deal with Dyson's duty-based rejection of her.

Last episode, Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) told Bo (Anna Silk) they could only have sex when she needed healing, that it was all their relationship could be. They’ve got the hots for each other so it’s inevitable their attraction will cause problems for The Ash (Cle Bennett) and The Morrigan (Emmanuelle Vaugier), not to mention Trick (Rick Howland).

In many ways, the Fae are human-like. Take Bo’s feeling of rejection by Dyson. She refuses to get out of bed (sound familiar?) so Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) pushes her to hit the bar with her to down countless shots. What do you do when you’re rejected? Maybe you bed someone, so Bo snags herself a threesome with a couple–Samir, a Fae (Stephen Colacitti) and Olivia, a Fury (Amber Goldfarb). (Hell hath no fury, got it?) The sex scene plays as more sensual than overtly sexual, and the nudity is tasteful. Too bad there won’t be frontal male nudity on network television anytime soon—so I say bring it on!

But, Bo isn’t the only one feeling lost. Dyson can’t concentrate at work so he’s referred to a therapist. Poor Fae dude, he’s nursing a broken heart, too. He tells Detective Hale (K.C. Collins), “Therapy is bullshit, human bullshit,” but what he really needs is someone to talk to—a professional. The lady psychologist (Rosemary Dunsmore) gives as good as she gets so I hope she sticks around longer so we can get inside Dyson’s head, especially when he mentions there’s a woman by episode’s end. Dunsmore brings a quiet steely strength to her role, proving a good match with Holden-Ried’s determined silence. You feel convinced the shrink will break down Dyson’s defenses.

In a surprise twist, the bad guy is a human, not Fae. In a scene that echoes Fatal Attraction, the murderer is Jenny (Krystin Pellerin), the woman with whom Samir had a one-night stand, only she thought it was something more. The one thing missing from Jenny is a wild mane of hair. Even without the wild hair, Pellerin is convincing as a woman scorned though her acting doesn’t particularly stand out, especially when you have a prime duo like Silk and Solo. The strongest guest star here is Dunsmore, and she is one I would like to see more of on Lost Girl.

In a humanistic mode, Bo displays a strong moral code by rejecting Olivia’s desire to kill her husband’s mistress (“You’re not hearing me—I’m not going to snuff out a life because it clashes with your drapes”). In a gesture of concern, she places her hand on Jenny’s shoulder, knowing full well what the consequences will be. As Bo herself is dealing with the sting of rejection, her empathizing is all the more heartfelt and tender. Silk plays this scene well, making me feel sorry for her. But what happens when Bo touches people?? So obviously a mistake; the only human who could be “immune” to Bo’s powers would be the doctor Lauren (Zoie Palmer). Dare I say their interactions are the ones I look forward to the most? I’m a little torn between Dyson and Lauren. Bo could easily be with both!

Review: Lost Girl - "Faetal Attraction" 2

Bo, investigating the strange case of a Fury scorned.

The problem I have with “Faetal Attraction” is the ending, when Bo suggests to Dyson they be friends with benefits.

Bo: “You don’t care. You don’t die. And, I trust you.”
Dyson: “Friends with benefits.”
Bo: “But definitely just friends.”
Dyson: “Deal.”

Big mistake! What are they thinking? Such situations never work out, and it’s doubly stupid for them because they aren’t in the same clan. I think we can predict this will bring major problems to the Fae. I can get behind it, though, because this will mean more love scenes.

Choice bits:

Kenzi, in the bar: “Girl, are you a succubus or a succu-bust?”

****

Bo: “For me, sexual healing is a literal thing.”

****

Bo: “You make me want to be a better Fae.”

Kenzi: “God, go seduce a yak… or something.”
