Review: Justified, Season 2, Ep. 3 “The I of The Storm”

If there is a position open for the poster-boy for idiots it would be Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman.) He really doesn’t have it all thought out but he sure cracks me up every time I see him. Dewey finds Boyd (Walter Goggins) sipping a drink at the local bordello known as Audrey’s. The conversation doesn’t seem to be very engaging but Dewey mentions he’s got something lined up to help his fortunes. Boyd appears to be concerned for Dewey’s well being and offers up some advice, even offering to donate money so Dewey can entertain a young lady but he refuses the charity.

Dewey to Boyd: “You know Boyd, for a guy who’s supposedly changed, you sound an awful lot like you always did.”

Dewey’s road to fortune stops dead in its tracks when two armed men hijack a bus with a load of stolen oxycontin leaving Dewey nothing for his “hard work.” But he’s scheming up a harebrained plan that will surely backfire on him when he poses as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in order to get back the drugs. Now honestly, who in their right mind would mistake Dewey for Raylan? I guess that hat is more trouble than it’s worth.

Boyd finds out Dewey impersonated Raylan to get the drugs back and offers up some sound advice:

“If you had any smarts in that head of yours, you would get in your car right now and you’d start driving and you wouldn’t stop until you saw the everglades.” But Dewey is too hardheaded to heed that subtle warning. “You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.” Boyd: “I know that if you stay here, you’re not long for this earth son.” Dewey looks a bit concerned but his libido is speaking too loudly for him to hear good sense!

The hijacking leads Raylan to suspect Boyd, but he’s changed his wicked ways hasn’t he? He’s working in the coal mines now. I reckon Boyd’s reputation precedes him because some other outlaws are looking to get Boyd back into the game. Kyle (Michael Mosley) doesn’t seem to be a threat at first, but he’s got something up his sleeve…too bad it wasn’t elbow and knee pads.

Boyd said he prefers to drink alone but Kyle just won’t listen. He’ll regret that soon enough when Boyd takes him for a little ride on his truck. Yes, ON his truck. Boyd grabs Kyle in a headlock after he tries to pull the keys out of the ignition. Boyd takes off while Kyle holds on for dear life. It’s darkly comedic to me. I just love Goggins as Boyd. He is absolutely a delight to watch and his delivery of his lines, how he portrays this character, and even his southern swagger just have me glued to set.

While Raylan is investigating the bus hijacking, an old friend Doyle Bennett (Joseph Lyle Taylor) tells him Boyd is shacking up with Ava (Joelle Carter.) Shut the front door! Raylan seems surprised so much so he pays Ava a visit. She’s not too thrilled with him, I mean, he cheated on her with his ex-wife Winona (Natalie Zea) who just so happens to be married to someone else! Don’t you just love the drama? The living arrangements aren’t as complex as they appear – Ava can’t afford the mortgage so she is letting Boyd rent out a room.

I wonder if the writers are going to try and spin a little love spell for Ava and Boyd? I don’t see Ava wanting to get involved with Boyd, however, it would make for an interesting plot twist especially if things don’t work out with Winona and Raylan. I mean, she isn’t divorcing her current husband until she is sure she and Raylan can be happy together. What’s that all about? She is even making him drive 50 miles outside of town to go to a bar and listen to a band play.

One of the funniest parts of “The I of The Storm” is when Raylan tracks Dewey down after getting a call from Boyd. He finds Dewey entertaining some women. After Raylan sends the women away, he questions Dewey about how he got the drugs. Dewey is reluctant to answer and Raylan says, “Oh, I’m sorry Dewey. Are you worried about looking like less than a man, because I believe that ship has already sailed.”

Something that keeps popping up is the term “Dixie Mafia.” Who are they? I hope we find out soon.
