Review: Justified, S4, Ep. 402 – “Where’s Waldo?”

Air date: Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 10PM E/P on FX

Rating:

“All of your fugitives are pussies.” – Art

If you thought living in a small southern town was boring, you ain’t been to Harlan, KY yet. It’s a veritable cornucopia of sex, drugs, booze, and danger. Will Preacher Billy (Joe Mazello) be the town’s salvation or will he be another obstacle in the way of Boyd’s (Walton Goggins) grand vision for Harlan?

Observations:

Raylan is getting a bit to cozy living the bar-life.

Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) seems like a man without a care in the world. He’s living above a bar, sleeping with the owner Lindsey (Jenn Lyon), and illegally moonlighting on the side. He’s a man who doesn’t like to get all mushy with emotions but his actions speak louder than words. With a baby on the way Raylan either needs to face reality and stop fooling himself into thinking his luck won’t run or sack-up and address his demons head on.

***

Ellen May (Abby Miller) gets baptized by the enigmatic Preacher Billy and it is a sight to see. Miller does such a wonderful job in her portrayal of a woman so down trodden; it’s easy to see why the viewer can empathize with her. Yes, as Ava (Joelle Carter) points out, Ellen May is a whore, but can’t a whore find salvation too? And Mazello is mesmerizing as the misplaced deliverer of the gospel. I’m not religious, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t want to get a little holy water sprinkled on me, too. I’m very eager to see how Billy and Boyd’s interactions play-out throughout the season. I don’t think Billy contemplated Boyd being so well versed in scripture. Their initial confrontation reveals something to Boyd—it is Billy’s sister Cassie (Lindsay Pulsipher) who’s pulling the strings. If looks could kill, Cassie’s stink eye just threw the first dagger aimed straight at Boyd’s heart.

***

Colton Rhodes (guest star Ron Eldard) is a wild card. I’m not sure what his true intentions are and why he came seeking Boyd, but I have a feeling things are going to get even bloodier, sooner rather than later. I wonder what Ava thinks about him being around. Eldard commands the scene with his seemingly random stories about Iraq, but make no mistake—he’s got manners and doesn’t like it when people interrupt him.

***

Did anyone else get the heebie-jeebies when those kids were singing inside Boyd’s bar? Seriously, cult-like kids in movies freak me out…think Children of the Corn. (Shudders).

***

Funny, they don't look like perverts.

Funny, they don’t look like perverts.

Art (Nick Searcy) steals the scenes he’s in but it’s what he says to a visiting Deputy Chief from Bowling Green, KY that piques my interests. He mentions something about one of his “lady Marshals” andalthough he doesn’t say her name outright, I know he’s talking about Rachel (Erica Tazel). Apparently, she was a contender for his job after he retired but now that she’s left her husband, he has to monitor her behavior for the next year. Wait…Rachel is/was married? I really love Tazel and thoroughly interested in knowing more about her character. I think Rachel’s going to go rouge…sort of. I’m dying to see that!

***

Memorable/Funny Lines:

Ellen May: “I need to save my soul, Ava, before it’s too late.”

Ava: “I saved your soul…remember? Not God; not Jesus Christ—me and my shotgun.”

***

Art to Raylan and Tim (Jacob Pitts) explaining one of his reasons for going along on a case: “And also that mystery bag thing is giving me a little bit of a Marshal stiffie.” I laughed so hard!

***

Why did Arlo (Raymond Barry) kill that guy in prison? It’s not just because the guy was part of the Dixie Mafia. It’s because that guy knew something about the diplomatic satchel and ID card of one Waldo Truth. “Where’s Waldo?” is the episode title but also a really good question. Well, unbeknownst to us, the answer appeared in the beginning of the season’s premiere episode. The drug mule who parachuted to his death is Waldo. With other questions remaining, let’s hope we get a few more exciting answers. And let’s hope we don’t see any more of Waldo’s ‘charming’ kin folk who have been so thoughtful collecting his “draw checks” while he’s been dead the last 30 years. “Perverts!”

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
