Wow. I so did not expect that ending. I was just dying to find out what happened between Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) when she crawled into bed with him after Vincent’s (Ryan Cartwright) death in “The Hole in the Heart,” but now I think we all KNOW what happened. However, I’ll come back to this a bit later.

Brennan (Emily Deschanel, R) and Booth (David Boreanaz, L) investigate remains found in a pinsetter at a bowling alley

After the remains of an obnoxious bowler, Jeff, are found grotesquely mangled up in the pin setter at a local bowling alley, Booth and Brennan, along with the help of Brennan’s father Max (guest star Ryan O’Neal) go undercover to find out who murdered him. Max, who’s in a wheelchair due to some extracurricular bedroom activities, seems suspicious of Booth and Brennan’s new demeanor. (Side note: Did anyone else want to strangle that little birthday brat? He should be the poster boy for birth control. Just sayin’.) Booth goes in as Buck, a mullet wearing scruffy pro-bowler. Alongside him, Brennan pretending to be his bubble-gum chewing arm candy, Wanda.

Max (guest star Ryan O'Neal, C) helps Brennan (Emily Deschanel, R) and Booth (David Boreanaz, L) when they go undercover at a bowling alley

Why is it that when you think of bowling alleys you automatically assume the patrons are stuck in circa 1987? Brennan is wearing very audacious lipstick, and a colorful shirt which is hideously hysterical, but the comment made by a rival team member, Blake (Andrew Matthews), had me rolling. “Daddy must have been a baker ‘cause that’s a great set of buns.” So cheesy! And Booth’s faux mullet garners the attention of a mature bowler who can’t seem to keep her hands off him. While Booth and Brennan are undercover, Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (TJ Thyne) anxiously await the arrival of their child. She’s already passed her due date so Angela decides it’s time to break out the hot sauce. Apparently it helps induce labor. Hodgins is hilarious! Every time Angela walks in the room he freaks out thinking they need to go to the hospital. It’s only when they get very involved in solving the murder that he becomes so immersed, he’s oblivious to Angela’s water breaking.

Although the case wasn’t that interesting to me, the characters at the bowling alley and the whole aura of the inner circle of bowling leagues aren’t off the mark. As much as I hate to admit it, I belonged to a junior bowling league in my teens. I didn’t have my own shoes or a customized ball, but I did have my own ball bag in the hopes of filling it one day. I digress. Max’s assessment regarding the bowlers’ reluctance to speak directly about the murder was spot on, but thankfully they love to gossip. The more I watched, the more I was convinced little juvenile tyrant Amber (Annalise Basso) was the killer. Sure she was a kid but she had “venom” just as Hercules (Kevin Alejandro) said. But alas, it was the bowling alley attendant who killed Jeff because of his funky feet (Jeff never wore socks with his rental shoes.) Ick!

Brennan (Emily Deschanel, L) visits with Angela (Michaela Conlin, R) after she has given birth

Angela and Hodgins have their own adventure while she’s in labor. The girlish screams coming from Hodgins when Angela grabs his shirt, chest hairs included, I imagine, had me laughing out loud. Angela switches from birth-zilla to sweet mommy-to-be every ten minutes but she still refuses to get an epidural. I’ll never understand why women choose au-natural. I mean, I know our “lady parts” are designed for it, but why suffer through the pain when you don’t have to? Being a mother myself, after the excruciating contractions I experienced, I tapped my own vein begging for an epidural! Needless to say, it was a happy ending with Angela giving birth to a healthy baby boy who will not be blind as they feared.

After visiting with Angela and Hodgins and seeing the baby, Booth and Brennan’s conversation turns to how much a child can complicate people’s lives. Booth begs to differ though. He thinks it’s a wonderful thing; after all, he’s already a father. Brennan drops an enormous bombshell when she tells him he’ll be a father again…she’s PREGNANT! So as we all thought and longingly hoped for, I guess we now know what happened in the bedroom that night. I mean, I’m sure he didn’t donate in a cup like Brennan had asked for in season four!

Brennan (Emily Deschanel, R) drops a bombshell on Booth (David Boreanaz, L)

So this was the cliffhanger we Bones fans are left to ponder. Brennan and Booth and baby? I loved when a smile spread across Booth’s face after Brennan tells him he’s the father. I think Brennan had been keeping herself off the market on purpose even when Booth was with Hannah. Maybe she hoped she could get over her fear of commitment and her fear of letting someone close enough so she could be with Booth. Well, the promos for the finale didn’t lie. Even though we will be talking about “The Hole in the Heart” because our beloved intern Vincent, which is now baby Michael’s middle name, was killed, “The Change in the Game” is the one that leaves us hanging on the edge, with a rapidly fraying rope, desperately waiting for season seven! Thanks Hart Hanson! (Note the sarcasm.)

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.

I had all but given up on Booth/Bones getting together as it sounded like Hart Hanson had no intention of making that happen. So I was thrilled and shocked by this ending! The way it was done was perfect–we discover what happened not via a recap or seeing the actual event, but by learning about the aftermath.

    1. Yes, I wasn’t sure if Hart was going to actually put these two together since the tension is what lures us back each week. And sometimes when the two main characters get together – it could be the kiss of death (like what happened with Moonlighting years ago with Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard.) I guess we will get some snippets of what happened that night in season 7 possibly using flash backs. I still am not sure if they will actually get together; yes they might be having a child but it doesn’t mean they will stay together…that could be the twist next season. I’m just throwing it out there.

I would actually be in favor if the latter–I don’t necessarily need/want to see them as a romantic couple, but would be interested in seeing how the baby affects their relationship and if/how they co-parent. The show will already be 7 seasons in, so I’m not that worried about this destroying the show–they are probably getting close to an end anyway.
