I attended the red carpet premiere of AMC’s new series Preacher while at this year’s SXSW Festival where I spoke to Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga about their new series.
Based on the DC Comic of the same name, Preacher is the tale of Jesse Custer (Cooper), a small town preacher who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that gives him supernatural powers. Negga plays Tulip O’Hare, Custer’s badass ex-girlfriend.
On the red carpet, executive producer Seth Rogan addressed fans’ concerns about him overseeing such a complex character given his comedy background. “I watch more dramatic movies and TV shows than I do comedic ones. It’s fun to finally get to participate in it. It just never felt organic. This was the first thing where we were like, I actually think we might be the most qualified people to do this at this moment… With Preacher, I think the version we want to do, we might be the best people to do it.”
Preacher debuts Sunday, May 22 at 10:00 pm ET/PT immediately following the mid-season finale of Fear the Walking Dead. There will be multiple airings of Preacher’s series premiere throughout the Memorial Day weekend, and new episodes will resume Sunday, June 5 at the series’ regular time, 9:00 pm ET/PT.
