The cast of AMC’s Preacher spoke to the press before their Comic Con panel, discussing the show’s potential incendiary plot. They also discussed the characters in season two, delving into the trauma of losing a child and the choice to have Hitler as a character on the show.

Preacher stars Dominic Cooper (Jesse), Ruth Negga (Tulip), Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy), Graham McTavish (The Saint of Killers), and Ian Colletti (Eugene) were joined by show creator and executive producer Seth Rogen for a look at their current season. Although this season’s fifth episode aired just before Comic Con, Rogen and cast promise an eventful continuation to season two.

Relationships and emotions are the heart of the show, and the pseudo love triangle that started in the first season among Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy has only gotten more complicated.

When asked if there is any hope for a true relationship between Cassidy and Tulip, Gilgun revealed just how much Cassidy truly cares for Tulip but also, how much Cassidy cares for Jesse as well.

“He loves her, he really does and it’s the worst feeling because it’s really long and drawn out,” said Gilgun. “He wants to be honest with his friend as well, but I don’t think Cassidy understands Jesse like Tulip does.”

With additional backstory revealed in season two, more of Jesse’s past is shown, hinting at even more darkness to be drawn out in his character as the season, and the show, progresses.

“The more I read about him, the more I am scared of him,” said Cooper. “I always knew there was a darkness bubbling just under his surface, but now he truly has the potential to become volatile and dangerous.”

This darkness could continue to drive a wedge between Jesse and Tulip as they struggle to find their way back to each other after the failure of their relationship. With Jesse’s blatant use of his abilities, granted to him by the entity Genesis, Tulip becomes more wary of his power when he uses it on her.

“She’s very suspicious of his power and thinks that if someone has authority, it should be used justly,” said Negga. “She’s a Robin Hood and she sees Jesse more as a Sheriff.”

Preacher creator and executive producer Seth Rogen shares what makes the show different from his other projects

Adapted from graphic novels, Seth Rogen notes there are certain aspects of Preacher that make the show larger than life. The score is prevalent and adds a noticeable element to the mood and tension, but only as the characters and storylines themselves are as equally exaggerated.

Fitting in with the larger-than-life plot and characters established in the first season of Preacher, having Hitler join the show in season two definitely warranted “a few conversations” with AMC. The intention was to treat him like a fully fleshed out character; thus, his relationship and interactions with Eugene would also develop Eugene’s journey in hell as well.

“We are trying to play with the ideas of redemption and change,” Rogen said. “It’s much more interesting to explore Hitler as a person, even though the worst one, but we wanted to embrace the idea of fully developing him.”

However Eugene’s friendship with Hitler says much more about Eugene’s character and his journey in the show. Rogen also hinted more would be revealed with Hitler and his relationship to the show in the upcoming episodes of season two.

At their official Comic Con panel, Preacher also revealed an all new trailer for season two showcasing what’s to come for the rest of the season, teasing more Eugene and Hitler, Jesse and the gang’s pursuit for God, and much more.

Preacher airs Mondays 9/8c on AMC.
