Looking for a New Love. Review: Lost Girl, S3 Ep 2 - "Subterrfaenean" 1

Is there a third wheel here somewhere?

The Fae family just keeps growing, like one big happy family (not). In “Subterrfaenean,” we meet a new species, the Alligator Fae, unfortunately barricaded underground by a greedy Pied Piper (Ted Atherton). It seems he considers Alligator Fae a delicacy, even better than humans. What he doesn’t expect is the leader, Atticus (Jordan Pettle), being able to fight back. What do you think of the Piper’s long bony arms that seem miles long? Oooeee, that is some major creepiness right there. Not sure what to make of Alligator Fae, though; they seem an unfortunate bunch.

Lauren (Zoie Palmer) and Bo (Anna Silk) are officially together. They muster plenty of steam, but the prolonged lovemaking between the two is sullied by Lauren’s insecurity: “The last two nights you’ve woken up screaming. Is committing to me that terrible?”  Her insecurity is perplexing. Is it because she still sees Dyson as a threat? Whatever the case, this is why I’m not really a fan of Lauren/Bo. If she expects monogamy, it won’t happen, as Bo is a Succubus. But there’s another “threat” Lauren should be worried about.

Tamsin is a Dark Fae with designs on Dyson

That threat is an intriguing Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten), a new addition to Lost Girl. She’s a Dark Fae who’s been assigned as Dyson’s (Kris Holden-Ried) cop partner. The thing is, she has a personal vendetta against Bo because Bo apparently killed a Dark Fae although she cannot recall it. It’s an act punishable by death, but Bo is not without conscience—she’s truly horrified when confronted by this bit of news. Tamsin’s ambush method is questionable, and elicits plenty of rage from Dyson, but she has a personal stake in getting to the bottom of this murder. Because she answers to The Morrigan (Emmanuelle Vaugier), and Dyson to The Ash (K.C. Collins), it’ll be interesting to see what develops with Tamsin and the others.

As much as I like Tamsin, it’s wearying to see her being introduced as a sex object (which hopefully will change sometime soon). When she kisses Dyson, it seems too quick. Of course, they have mad chemistry but if Tamsin is being thrown into the picture as a conflict with Bo, I’m not sure where the storyline will take us. Sure, I like the banter between her and Dyson but it feels a little old hat to have a female character using her sexuality, feminine swagger and tough-cop façade to seduce a male, though it’s clear she’s brainy. And what of her being Dark and Dyson being Light? That’s sure to cause plenty of conflict among the Fae.

Now that Tamsin is in the picture, will Dyson ever tell Bo his love for her has returned? And what of Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo) sacrifice for Dyson? Those are two of the matters niggling at me right now.

And what will this bode for Vex (Paul Roger Amos)? Will there be room for him somewhere on the team, even though right now he seems to be nothing more than comic relief? Sitting in Bo’s place, eating cereal and wearing her kimono—what can he possibly bring to Lost Girl? I liked him in “Subterrfaenean,” and thought his line about not wanting to miss The Real Housewives marathon was funny, but where’s the character development? He’s growing on me, but I don’t think he’s going to bring much to the third season.

The Dream Weaver is hired to get to the root of Bo’s nightmares but she has other things on her mind–namely, Trick!

Trick has his hands full with what Bo has been going through. With the help of a Dream Weaver (Phyllis Ellis), he wants to find the cause of Bo’s nightmares. What we see, though, is something more horrifying than I expected; it even horrifies the Dream Weaver herself: “It was something you ate.” This is no answer for Bo, and she remains clueless about her Dark days. (By the way, the Dark is still somewhere inside of her so why didn’t it come out in this episode?)

Next week, Vex is the unwitting bearer of bad news from The Morrigan. Stay tuned for more trouble coming our way!
