Lost Girl, S1 Ep5, “Dead Lucky”

Air date: Monday, February 13, 2012, 10/9c, only on Syfy

Rating:

“Dead Lucky” has a healthy mix of comedy and drama, and a new interaction between Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) and Det. Hale (K.C. Collins), something I hadn’t considered but can definitely get behind as Det. Hale is pretty studly. He should have a bigger role than just being Dyson’s Fae sidekick.

Once again (not complaining, just saying), we witness Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) healing Bo (Anna Silk). They’re at the police station and this time, they both decide they need to set some ground rules for their “friends with benefits” status. Did you see how Bo’s face falls when he reminds her they’re not exclusive? Dyson is none too happy about it, either. Silk and Holden-Ried have some serious chemistry, which may easily overshadow Lost Girl if they’re not careful. If the healing continues in this vein, it could get boring so I hope the writers will be up to the task of keeping viewers interested. It’s not that I don’t like seeing Dyson half naked, mind you (Holden-Ried is gorgeous, of course), but you can see a buff body anywhere. On television, they are a dime a dozen.

If you’ve been wondering about the Dark Fae, wonder no more. Mayer (Aron Tager), a Dark Fae bookie (aka Luck Fae) has his henchmen kidnap Bo so he can hire her to uncover how Roger (Richard Harte), a gambler whose luck Mayer “drained,” was able to scam the house. We don’t really learn anything new about the Dark Fae other than they don’t believe in mercy.

Meanwhile, Kenzi branches out on her own, meeting a potential client. Funny thing is, this potential client is a loon who insists her cat, Mr. Snickerpants, is possessed and wants to kill her. In other words, this isn’t a case meant for Bo and Kenzi but it provides some comic relief, with Kenzi’s quizzical, then puzzled, and finally exasperated look before she calls up Bo to find out where she is (“This puts the suck in ‘succubus’”).  Solo has a knack for employing so many facial expressions; Kenzi needs a sidekick of her own. She can continue to be Bo’s sidekick, but then she should have her own. Det. Hale, maybe, since Hale reminds her several times that she needs to branch out beyond being just Bo’s sidekick. I think he sees real potential in Kenzi.

Our intrepid Fae investigator goes undercover with her human sidekick

Which brings me to my favorite quote of this episode, which is revealing of Kenzi’s dedication and protectiveness of Bo.

Kenzi to Dyson: “I just barfed in my mouth. Dude, I can’t believe I backed you with Bo. You make me look like a total tool. And, the worst part is you treated her like shit but somehow you’re forgiven. That’s why I’m no longer on Team Dyson. Peace!”

Then she sticks a Post-It note on Dyson that says “I’m stupid” and leaves in a huff. Dyson says nothing, only crumples the note in his hand. Without saying a word, he admits to his complicity and expresses remorse for it. I’m a little surprised Bo doesn’t tell Kenzi what really happened between her and Dyson. Aren’t they practically sisters by now? And Kenzi has a nifty little radar where she can suss out any negative situation. Take Bo being attacked by a Hrimthurs, a Frozen Giant, for example. She bursts in to save Bo from almost certain death.

Now we get to a secret of Dyson’s. When he heals Bo from being nearly frozen to death, she fears she’ll kill him, but he reassures her to take all she needs. Which is a mistake, because afterwards he’s clearly weak. Obviously, he has limits to his healing abilities that he has not told her about. Will Bo continue being greedy and taking all she can get, especially when they’re in love? Look, they find any chance to heal her, and what will happen when their marathon healing sessions weaken him again? What will be the long-term impact on his Fae strengths? This is a question I hope gets answered this season.

Basically, the evildoer here is a Hsien, a Dark Fae named Lucas (James Preston Rogers) who jumps into dead bodies. It is Lucas who inhabits Roger to scam Mayer’s casino. This isn’t as interesting as what happens afterwards, when Kenzi tells Dyson she knows how much he cares for Bo. She’s quick, isn’t she? But even so, she isn’t so easily swayed. Dyson will have to work to get back into her good graces.

Dyson: “What, are you back on Team Dyson?”
Kenzi: “You wish.”
Dyson: “Come on, we’re getting T-shirts.”

Major reveal: Cassie’s vision tells Bo her mother is alive.
