The main character in the upcoming film, a re-imagined version of the Hitman video game series about a bald assassin named 47, is being played by Rupert Friend (the 2007 version starred Timothy Olyphant). While Friend was unable to attend Comic Con due to being in South Africa filming Showtime’s Homeland, actors Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story) and Hannah Ware (Boss) represented the film during the press conference. They play John Smith and Katia van Dees, respectively. Ware’s character is new for video game fans as this character is being introduced in the film.

The panel began on a solemn tone as Paul Walker, who originally had been cast as 47, was remembered. Quinto had graceful words to honor Walker, whose untimely passing happened fairly close to production time.

The panel members eventually provided a more detailed overview of the film. Quinto described it as “a really large scale, high stakes action film,” rooted in the relationships and dynamics of the characters played by himself, Ware, and Friend. “It’s a real triangle and basically, Katia is looking for someone; my character, John Smith, presents himself to her in an effort to help her find who she’s looking for but nothing is what it seems with these people,” he explained. “All of us are serving agendas sometimes at odds with what we’re presenting.”

Quinto was particularly eager to share how different the current film is from the 2007 version. “I think it’s eight years since they made that movie. I think technology and cinematography have evolved in a lot of ways. I think it’s very different visually. There’s a scale to this movie and a dynamic to it; there’s a sleekness to it that I think separates it a little bit from that previous film. But again, times are different and appetites have changed and people have higher expectations for visual effects and special effects, and I think that’s what this movie is based in –what it’s really trying to pursue at the same time as trying to being something rooted in character and the dynamics of those relationships.”

Ware and Quinto were excited to film in Berlin and Singapore as international locations are a key part of the film.

International locations play a key part of Hitman: Agent 47. “We shot about the first two-thirds of the move in Berlin and then we moved to the whole thing to Singapore for the last three weeks. We were in Berlin for about two months and then moved to Singapore,” Quinto revealed. “You couldn’t really get more different as far as cities are concerned, in terms of lifestyle and architecture. It was an amazing experience to be in both of them and bring them to life and to capture it as well as they did.”

Ware confirmed the cities are important to the plot. “Both of the cities in their own way are integral to the plot.”

For Ware and Quinto, physical training and stunt work was a significant part of the preparation for their roles. According to Quinto, “I think for us especially, the physical aspects of these characters became really important in how they present themselves to the world but what is really going on, maybe it’s something different. There’s a lot of stunt training, prep work. It was great fun actually.” On the other hand, Quinto revealed that Friend explored the world through the video game as part of his preparation for the movie.

Since van Dees is a new character, Ware was extremely careful not to give away too much. However, she confirmed her character has some femme fatale qualities, as well as other qualities that don’t readily come to light when you first meet her on screen. “Katia proves to be of stronger constitution than one might think she is. She’s never presented as ordinary. She has strengths in other ways,; abilities in other ways. I think what’s really exciting is that she discovers that while the audience is discovering it.”
