“What are you without the troubles, Mara? Lifeless, numb; you even capable of love?” – Nathan

A flashback to Audrey and Nathan making pancakes

A flashback to Audrey and Nathan making pancakes

“Spotlight” gets steamy and oh yes, there are pancakes involved. Fans of Haven know what I’m talking about but to enlighten those who may not be so inclined, the term “pancakes” is a sexual innuendo referring to Nathan (Lucas Bryant) and Audrey’s (Emily Rose) relationship. He can’t cook but he can make pancakes (the fluffy kind). And while “Spotlight” shows us a flashback of Nathan and Audrey getting hot and heavy, there is more steamy action going on between Nathan and Mara (Emily Rose). They don’t make “pancakes,” but there are the edible kind Nathan makes for breakfast. For more on this steamy pancakes topic, you should check out the conference call with Emily Rose and Lucas Bryant we had prior to the start of the season.

Before we get into Nathan and Mara’s groping scenes, let’s talk about the new “trouble” happening in “Spotlight.” A Haven resident, Jody (Lucia Walters), is shooting laser beams from her chest. I know I’m not the only one thinking she has laser boobs! Alas, the lasers come from her torso but don’t originate in the center of her breasts like those boob-guns from Austin Powers. These laser beams are deadly and cause a lot of anxiety for many. While this is an intriguing trouble, it unfortunately takes a back seat to the other story arcs in play. I have to mention how much I adore Haven’s resident medical examiner Gloria, played brilliantly by Jayne Eastwood. “…sunlight amplifying trouble…geez, get out your SPF five million.” She cracks me up.

Duke (Eric Balfour) gives himself a haircut. I know many of you out there love his long shaggy locks but I’m digging the new short cropped look. It pains me to see Duke grieving over Jennifer (Emma Lahana) but his haggard appearance is far more dangerous than his mourning. He’s full of “troubles” and he’s basically a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. I’m still not sure how Mara can alleviate Duke’s symptoms by giving someone else a trouble…I got confused on that part. If you figured it out, please clue me in.

Mara can really be manipulative...especially with Nathan so vulnerable and pining for Audrey

Mara can really be manipulative…especially with Nathan so vulnerable and pining for Audrey

Now to the nitty gritty that is Mara and Nathan. In last week’s “Speak No Evil,” Nathan believes he saw Audrey’s persona emerge from an unconscious Mara. Audrey tells him she’s still in there and not to give up on her. This pushes Nathan to lie to Dwight (Adam Copeland), telling him Mara escaped. Meanwhile, Nathan takes Mara to an old hunting cabin in the woods to try and extract Audrey from within Mara. If you are a bit confused, it’s ok. It can be perplexing to those who’ve not seen the many incarnations of Audrey over the years. Brief recap – Audrey is one incarnation of Mara who is the creator of the troubles in Haven.

Mara is apparently 500 years old but has lived through various identities over the years. Since the start of Haven, we know about Sarah, Lucy, Audrey, and Lexie. There is a new one mentioned in “Spotlight” by Mara, and not in a good way. “You should have met the others. Lucy was such a tramp and Veronica – she swung both ways.” Mara is a real piece of work. My hat’s off to Rose for her performance this season because she morphs into this brazen character as if she’s been Mara the whole time Haven has been on air. But then we see sweet Audrey peek through at times, and we remember how much we love and miss her.

Audrey pops up while Mara is asleep. She tells Nathan, “Don’t give up. Don’t talk to Mara; just talk to me like Audrey. It’s the only way that I can fight her.” This is quite the conundrum we have here. Do we believe this is Audrey or is Mara playing an elaborate trick?

Dwight is in no mood for 'Audrey' games. He want Mara to end the troubles or he'll end her.

I admit, I appreciate Mara’s boldness and blunt delivery of lines, especially this one she says to Nathan. “Would you evolve already? Sex is cardio. If sex makes a relationship, then everything you say you feel for Audrey would be a lie.” What? Am I being obtuse? Nathan and Audrey did have sex but they developed a relationship based on trust and friendship before they made “pancakes.” Again, if you understood the meaning to that statement, please enlighten me.

Mara’s origins and background have yet to be fully revealed, so thanks Nathan for asking. “Tell me about where you come from. Why aren’t you trying to get back there? Don’t you have friends and family?” Is Mara some supernatural immortal being? “Of course…and I will when I’ve finished my work here. It’ll be quite the reunion…” Hmm. I wonder if where she comes from has anything to do with the mysterious barn.

Is Audrey’s persona truly alive within Mara? If so, she and Mara still share one body. If Audrey’s essence can be extracted, won’t Mara’s aura still be lurking inside waiting to pop out? Or is Mara just a vicious persona like all the others? To keep things simple, there have been many versions of Audrey, and they all have the same face and body just different clothes, hairstyle, and personalities. Who’s to say Mara isn’t just another version? Aside from Mara, all the other personas – Sarah, Lucy, Lexie, and Audrey (twice) – have wanted to help the troubled people of Haven. It seems Audrey keeps coming back. Is Audrey the true persona?

We’ll have to wait to find out. Dwight shows up at the very end and captures Mara foiling Nathan’s plans to help Audrey break free from Mara.

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
