As I suspected at the end of the first half of Haven’s fifth season, these are the final episodes and it’s quite bittersweet. Picking up where “Chosen” left off, “New World Order” begins with Duke (Eric Balfour) kneeling on the ground with a rain storm of black “aether” balls flooding from his eyes making their way into the unsuspecting citizens of Haven.

If you aren’t familiar with the show’s premise or what the heck aether is, quick overview – the town is cursed, so to speak, and the citizens have uncontrollable supernatural abilities called “the troubles.” The troubles were created by our heroine Audrey’s (Emily Rose) evil doppelgänger Mara (Emily Rose) using the dark substance known as aether (a black putty). Duke’s family “cured” people of their troubles by killing one of the family members, thereby stopping the generational recurrences. Before Mara’s demise in the mid-season finale, she modified the troubles and now all the troubles Duke and his family cured are being unleashed upon the already troubled townsfolk.

Meanwhile, Audrey and her main squeeze, who also happens to be Haven PD Detective Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant), desperately try to assist Chief of Police Dwight (Adam Copeland) when a mysterious, impenetrable fog begins to surround Haven, causing the hysterical masses to lose control of their emotions and their troubles. To make matters worse, Audrey’s mother Charlotte (guest star Laura Mennell), who is supposedly working on a way to actually cure the troubles, lets a big secret out of the bag. With the troubles seemingly incurable, the only thing left to do is calm the good people of Haven so their troubles will subside, but that’s easier said than done. One of the local police officer’s troubles freezes people in place when he becomes paralyzed with fear. With most of the police force unable to move, who is left to protect Haven?

Meanwhile, the Teague Brothers, Vince (Richard Donat) and Dave (John Dunsworth), try to figure out the meaning of the word “Croatoan,” which is carved into a rock in the local forest. Is Haven to become the next lost colony? With the help of the delightfully sarcastic medical examiner Gloria (Jayne Eastwood), Vince helps Dave bring about one of his strange visions by having him ingest the illegal tequila Gloria keeps in the morgue freezer.

During all of the chaos, Duke realizes he may be immune to some of the troubles and he is the only one able to get through the fog. But if Duke leaves, what will that mean for Haven and the new batch of troubles that have been unleashed? Some of these people already had a trouble and are now being double-troubled (yes, I said it). Audrey has the gift of talking folks down off the ledge but she can’t handle helping the entire town.

Dwight makes an executive decision to enlist the Guard (the tattooed people) to restore order and balance, and help the troubled people cope with their newfound powers. Is this now the new order in Haven? No more Haven PD?

“New World Order”” sets up some interesting plot points for the remainder of the season. And William Shatner, who will be guest starring in a multi-episode arc, is noted to be a pivotal character who may impact the fate of Haven. Other returning guest stars for the remainder of the season are Kris Lemche as paranormal investigator Seth Byrne, whom we first met in season four’s “Shot In the Dark;” Steve Lund as the Colorado Kid (wait…I thought he was dead?); and Jay Reso (aka WWE Superstar Christian) as McHugh, a childhood friend of Dwight’s.

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
