“You shall break them with a rod.” – Grimm

As with any penultimate episode preceding a series finale, you know tragic deaths of beloved main characters are imminent, and “Zerstörer Shrugged” is no different. I’ve said it before but I’m certain of it now – I’m not ready to say goodbye to the cast of Grimm; unfortunately, the writers give me no choice.

After last week’s episode, “Where the Wild Things Were,” I knew something terrible would happen in “Zerstörer Shrugged.” As Eve (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Nick (David Giuntoli) come back from the other side through the mirror, someone hitches a ride. Apparently, the “Zerstörer” (guest star Wil Traval) needed a Grimm to come through the portal. And now that he is in our world, he’s in human form and just as powerful as ever. Why are bad guys sexy? I mean, it’s like the writers are tempting me to root for the hot, naked guy with abs (yes, naked) and that’s not cool. I digress. I’m not sure if Zerstörer has his own abilities but so far, it seems his power comes from the staff he carries. Oh, and he apparently likes to mimic people – “Watch it!” – I guess English isn’t his first language.

This entire final season up to now has been a bit of a roller coaster. While the writers have given us some fantastic Wesen-centric episodes, as well as some absolutely hilarious ones – “Blind Love” and Hank’s (Russell Hornsby) self-love (priceless) – I’ve been trying to piece the puzzle together. I never fathomed the runes and symbols would lead to this peculiar conclusion, nor did I ever guess some omnipresent being from some parallel dimension would want to take Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) as his “child bride.”

As Zerstörer paves a path of destruction, Renard (Sasha Roiz) and Adalind (Claire Coffee) do what they can to conceal Diana from the evil headed their way. Although, Zerstörer may want more than a wife…he may want a prodigy. Perhaps Nick’s infant son Kellie isn’t safe either and may need a dose of the “fairy dust” Adalind sprinkles on his big sister Diana. There’s also the magic stick Nick and Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) found; it appears the stick may be the final piece to Zerstörer’s staff.

There’s nowhere to hide with every home, including “The Spice Shop,” having some connection to everyone in the group. It’s befitting to go to a forgotten, yet familiar place where it all began – the small cottage from the pilot episode where Nick first realized he’s a Grimm. While it’s secluded and remote, I don’t think anywhere will be safe from Zerstörer.

Monroe, along with Rosalee and Eve, find some interesting reading about powerful staffs from history — (Photo by: Allyson Riggs/NBC)

Monroe’s research about the magic healing stick leads him to a passage about a prophecy, “The staff was broken into one hundred pieces and scattered throughout the world to keep its powers out of the hands of evil.” If that’s the case, the staff Zerstörer carries could be a combination of many powerful rods carried throughout history, like Moses’ staff, for example. If his staff becomes whole, there will be no stopping Zerstörer from taking what he wants. What if Diana wields the magic stick while using her powers; could she be powerful enough to stop Zerstörer?

Eve leaves a part of herself on the other side and Diana senses it. It appears Eve is no longer a Hexenbiest after she comes back through the mirror. I believe Zerstörer knew this would happen. Evidently, Hexenbiests may be an obstacle for him. Eve is taken aback by her loss of powers; she had this immense ability thrust upon her and became an integral part of destroying “Black Claw” and helping out but now, she’s human again, so to speak. It’s like being filthy rich for a while, having everything at your disposal, and then becoming a pauper in the blink of an eye.

So glad Trubel is back! Maybe two Grimms are better than one against Zerstorer. — (Photo by: Allyson Riggs/NBC)

Without spoiling anything, I’ll simply say it’s great to have Jacqueline Troboni return as Trubel before the series finale. I’ve missed her and I know the gang has too. While Hank and Wu (Reggie Lee) continue to investigate a series of crimes linked to Zerstörer, it’s on Monroe, Rosalee (Bree Turner), and Eve to fill Trubel in on what’s going on. I hate to think of losing any one of these beloved characters, but I knew by the end of “Zerstörer Shrugged,” we would lose some people along the way. That said, I wasn’t ready for how two of our friends meet their end.

Overall

Season six of Grimm has been an epic journey. There is a fantastic moment between Nick and Adalind at the cottage that melts my heart and there are moments that shatter it. “Zerstörer Shrugged” leads us to what will surely be a grand series finale with more death and destruction before the dust settles. But I’m confident good shall prevail over evil, and love conquers all. I am curious about one thing, though. I wonder if we’ll ever know about Rosalee’s pregnancy and how many buns are really in the oven.

What did you think of “Zerstörer Shrugged?” I’d love to hear from other Grimmsters. Leave me a comment below or tweet me at @judybopp. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
