“No man chooses evil because it is evil; he may only mistake it for happiness.” – Grimm

Ok, can we talk about the elephant in the room, which is the so-called monster the Grimm writers introduced in this week’s episode, “The Son Also Rises?” A Frankenstein type creature? Really? I mean, the Wesen of the week cases have been pretty awesome lately, but this particular story arc is a bit contrived. That’s not to say “The Son Also Rises” isn’t enjoyable to watch, but this particular ‘case of the week’ didn’t quite float my boat. The writers even included a character named Dr. Victor Shelley (guest star Geoffrey Blake) – a play on the Dr. Victor Frankenstein character from Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein.” The great thing about this is Hank (Russell Hornsby) and Wu (Reggie Lee) get to work together while Nick (David Giuntoli) tends to another matter.

During the preliminary investigation of the murder of Dr. Deirdre Hampton (Dinora Walcott) at the local university, Nick receives a call from Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) about Eve (Elizabeth Tulloch). Apparently, Eve likes to tempt fate in spite of what she saw in Nick’s bathroom. “Who were you? Who are you now?” Eve asks her own reflection. Well, the antique hand-mirror answers and something terrible, yet incredibly intriguing happens. And my question about Eve still being a Hexenbiest is answered.

After the call, Nick says something to Hank and Wu that struck me odd, and Wu doesn’t miss a beat.

Nick: “Juliette’s hurt; I have to go to the hospital.”

Hank: “OK. Let me know how she is. Don’t worry, we got this.”

Nick leaves.

Wu: “Did he just say Juliette?”

Hank: “Yeah, he did.”

I love Wu’s exuberant enthusiasm while working the case with Hank. The way he gets so excited over some peculiarities regarding the potential suspects made me giggle. But when you have two dead guys’ prints at the crime scene, that’s more than a bit strange…then again, it is Portland, right? #KeepPortlandWeird

He speaks Russian, too!? — (Photo by: Allyson Riggs/NBC)

The two most intriguing aspects of this week’s episode are Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) reaching out to an acquaintance in Siberia to figure out Diana’s (Hannah R. Lloyd) drawings of the runes (way to keep it a secret, Diana), and Eve meddling with forces she knows nothing about.

By the way, Renard speaking Russian is hot. I mean, can he just stop already with the languages – French, Russian – and thankfully, he remains fully clothed. If he had his shirt off, I would have exploded. #swoon #newmeaningtohotflashes

I digress. Dasha (guest star Alla Korot) seems to be troubled by the drawings, which makes me wonder if there is more to them than just a cosmic calendar. I’m curious to see where the writers take this story arc, and whether Dasha knows more than she lets on to Renard via the video chat. Whatever it is, it scares her.

Is Nick having a change of heart about Eve? Or is he feeling guilty because his being a Grimm led to the circumstances causing her to become a Hexenbiest? — (Photo by: Allyson Riggs/NBC)

At the hospital visiting Eve, Nick has some flashbacks to his time with Juliette (Tulloch) before she turned into Eve. The flashbacks go all the way to season one when his Aunt Marie (Kate Burton) tells him things may not work out with Juliette once she finds out he’s a Grimm. In one memory, Nick recalls something his mother Kellie (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) says about Juliette. “I don’t know what will happen with Juliette, but don’t make the same mistake I did; don’t leave the people you love.” Is Nick feeling nostalgic because this scenario with Eve being unconscious happened before at the end of season one when Juliette was hospitalized and subsequently forgot who Nick was? Or perhaps Nick is having a change of heart about his feelings for Eve? The circumstances surrounding the dissolution of Nick and Juliette’s relationship are still fresh. Could Nick be feeling guilty? After all, his Aunt warned him about the dangers of being a Grimm. Granted, he’s with Adalind (Claire Coffee) now and they have a son together, but in last week’s “Blind Love,” while under the influence of Cupid’s excessive love potion, Eve told Nick she still loves him and there’s no one else for her. She also said the baby should have been hers and not Adalind’s. Everyone had a different reaction. I mean, I don’t think Nick loves Rosalee (Bree Turner) like he professed but with Eve, it’s different. Her feelings for Nick were real; maybe deep down, they still are. After all, they were a couple for years. I’m curious to see what happens between these two now that Eve has moved out of Nick and Adalind’s loft.

Another very interesting tidbit is Monroe’s vivid nightmare or, perhaps premonition, about the birth of his children. That pesky number seven keeps surfacing. First, it was the seven keys, then seven Grimms. Now, there’s  the possibility of Rosalee giving birth to septuplets; yikes! That could give any new father nightmares. I wonder if Monroe’s dream is tied to what Diana said regarding how many babies are actually in Rosalee’s womb. If you recall, Diana said “more,” without giving much detail.

Overall

“The Son Also Rises” is entertaining, including parts of the whole Frankenstein monster plot. While the case serves its purpose of putting Hank and Wu together, it does little to move the main story lines forward. The mirror and Renard’s Siberian connection are what makes “The Son Also Rises” worth watching. Although, Monroe’s handling of the pseudo multiple births in the middle of the night is also quite fun to watch.

What did you think of “The Son Also Rises?” I’d love to hear from other Grimmsters. Leave me a comment below or tweet me at @judybopp. Looking forward to hearing from you!
