In true Grimm form, the season six premiere, “Fugitive,” picks up exactly where we left off in the season five finale, “Beginning of the End.” As the new Mayor-Elect of Portland, Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz), and Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Guintoli) stand, facing each other, over Bonaparte’s (guest star Shaun Toub) cold, dead body, both men are confused as to what just transpired. The audience knows Renard’s daughter Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) is behind the mysterious slaying, but that whole debacle will have to wait. Her powers are frightening, not to mention how well Lloyd plays ‘the creepy kid’ with aplomb. I wouldn’t want to meet her alone in a darkened alley, or anywhere else, for that matter.

It’s been nearly eight months since “Beginning of the End” aired on May 20, 2016, and as Grimm begins its sixth and final season, I’ll put aside my frustrations with the seemingly sudden rift between Nick and Renard and focus on the story at hand. In “Fugitive,” we learn a lot more about the magical stick Nick and Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) found in last season’s “Into the Schwarzwald.”  But things hurtle forward and get downright cutthroat. The fury is roiling beneath the surface as Renard pits Nick’s own precinct against him. Even Hank (Russell Hornsby) and Wu (Reggie Lee) are caught in the cross-hairs of Renard’s vengeance. The person I feel for is Sgt. Franco (Robert Blanche). He’s a loyal cop who believes in abiding by the rules and senses something isn’t quite right when Renard claims Nick is responsible for the North Precinct massacre. The drama is deliciously intense and things get very hairy for Nick and all the people involved. And don’t get me wrong, I adore Bud (Danny Bruno), but perhaps enlisting his help isn’t the best move. He’s so jumpy!

Grimm doesn’t skimp on the drama or the mystery and intrigue we’ve all come to love about the series. Along with the kill order and the strange healing powers the magic stick possesses, other, even more peculiar things are afoot. My concern is that the stick’s ability to save people, even from death, may have serious repercussions for those who use it.

Throughout “Fugitive,” bits and pieces of future story lines are revealed. One particular story arc I’m completely intrigued by is the “death grip” Eve (Bitsie Tulloch) experiences when she helps Rosalee (Bree Turner) and Monroe clear up the dead bodies Trubel (Jaqueline Toboni) left behind during the skirmish in the season five finale.

Another interesting turn of events deals with the old cloth that wrapped the wooden stick. Eve sees something no one else can see, which begs the question – is she still a Hexenbiest? The wicked ‘seizure-biest out’ she had when Nick used the stick on her in last season’s finale did more than just heal her wounds. Could it have reversed the effects of the spell that originally transformed her into a Hexenbiest? Or perhaps it ‘wiped her slate clean’ of all the evil things she’s done as Eve. As Trubel says, “Maybe she got her soul cleaned.” Hmmm. A stick that heals and cleanses the soul…sign me up!

And if you are wondering whether Nick and Adalind (Claire Coffee) finally declare their love for each other, let’s just say you’ll get a confirmation, of sorts. I am very interested in knowing what will happen to Adalind’s children, including her son with Nick, if she removes the engagement ring Bonaparte gave her on behalf of Renard last season. Now that Bonaparte is dead, is the ring still dangerous? Does a Zauberbiest’s powers live on even in death?

At the end of last season, the Portland division of Hadrian’s Wall (HW) was completely demolished, and Meisner (Damien Puckler), their leader, killed, so what will happen in the war against Black Claw? Renard is about to take office as Mayor and things are going to get worse for any Wesen that  doesn’t tow the line. I have a feeling something remarkable will come about this season with HW; perhaps we will see other Grimms heading to Portland in an effort to thwart Renard and the remaining Black Claw members.

“Fugitive” signals a bittersweet, yet wonderful return of Grimm. While I’m saddened that this is the final season, I am excited to see where things go and how the writers wrap things up.  After having seen the first three episodes of season six, I know things are going to get even more odd and delightfully intriguing.

What did you think of “Fugitive?”  I’d love to hear from other Grimmsters. Leave me a comment below or tweet me at @judybopp. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
