Review: Grimm, S2, Ep. 203 – “Bad Moon Rising”

Is it wrong that I really wanted to hear the Creedence Clearwater Revival song when the Coyotl throw down started happening? Am I alone on that?
Hank’s (Russell Hornsby) goddaughter Carly (Maddie Hasson) is missing and Nick (David Giuntoli) wants to help him find her. When Carly’s father Jarold (guest star Mark Pelligrino) seeks Hank’s help at the police station, Nick catches a glimpse of what Gerald really is while Hank’s head is turned away. Pelligrino is no stranger to television having been on great shows like Supernatural, Being Human, and Dexter. He’s a talented actor and his convincing portrayal of a distraught father adds depth to the storyline.
John Pyper-Ferguson as Hayden
Carly is taken by her estranged Uncle Hayden (guest star John Pyper-Ferguson) for a barbaric mating ritual for his sons. It seems in-breeding isn’t frowned upon in some Coyotl packs. Pyper-Ferguson plays Hayden with an air of logical psychosis. After all, like pack animals, they look out for their own, and when one of them walks away or breaks the pack, it’s considered the ultimate betrayal. But, unlike normal pack animals, Coyotls are neither fully animal nor fully human. And therein lays the conundrum.

I truly enjoyed “Bad Moon Rising” but because of the recent incest-themed episodes from Game of Thrones and True Blood, I wasn’t keen on seeing any other familial mating rituals. Cousin Todd (Hunter Jackson) salivating at the thought of completing the rites with young Carly was the only real turn off for me in “Bad Moon Rising.”
Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) seems to remember everything—where she works, her co-workers, her house, hell, she even remembers Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and making vegan cedar plank salmon for him—but has no clue who Nick is. I’m wondering if those eye drops did the opposite—instead of stopping the memory loss of Nick, it sped it up. I really want to know where they’re going with this story arc. I also want to know if perhaps the kiss from Cpt. Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) altered the effects of the drops, and whether Juliette will have any inkling toward him when she sees him.
Russell Hornsby as Hank
Hank is having a hard time dealing with what’s been happening and during a therapy session, he freaks out, almost hurting his therapist. With all the Coyotls transforming, Nick realizes he has to explain things to Hank to prevent him from quitting the force altogether. I knew Nick would eventually confide in Hank but I find it curious that Hank sees the creatures for what they are. Does that mean Hank has some kind of supernatural ability like Nick? Am I missing something from season one because last I recalled, humans aren’t supposed to be able to see the creatures. At any rate, I’d like to know how this will play into Nick and Hank’s future cases. Maybe it’s just me, but why does nearly every single case involve some kind of creature? Aren’t there any human criminals left in Portland? Haha.
Humorous moments:
Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) makes an observation to Nick comparing his day to Nick and Hank’s: “Hey, so let me get this straight; the last six hours you’ve arrested six felons, saved a damsel in distress, reunited a family while I’ve filled out three dozen overtime reports and scrubbed out the coffee maker. Yeah, we’ve all put in a rich, full day.” Sgt. Wu doesn’t sound bitter at all. (giggle)

Nick tries to rationalize the day’s events with Hank but gets an unexpected answer:
Hank: “Today has been one of the better days of my life.”
Nick (stunned): “Really?”
Hank: “Yeah.”
Nick: “How?”
Hank: “Because I might be crazy but now I know I’m not alone.”
Observation:
Sean insists they find Catherine’s (Jessica Tuck) killer but he already knows who did it. Why does he push Nick to find Adalind (Claire Coffee)? Is there something else to the whole Juliette poisoning that we still don’t know? I’m ready for Sean’s brother Eric (James Frain) to visit Portland and I want to know if Nick’s mother knows him.
