“This is Crowder. I can promise him a rocket ship and a goddamn unicorn.” — Wynn Duffy

“Kin” takes us into the hills of Harlan County where blood runs thicker than water. The hunt for Drew Thompson goes deep into the country where we find there’s kin where you’d least expect it—and rifles. Lots and lots of rifles. Whoo doggy! Justified sure does know how to put on a good show.

Observations:

Tell me those eyebrows don't make him look devilish.

Tell me those eyebrows don’t make him look devilish.

Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns) is quite the interesting character. He doesn’t even jump in a scene that makes me flinch (who saw that gunshot coming?). Is he that poised and confident that he knows he’s in no danger? I don’t know why this guy is still around but he seems to be in for the long haul. What I think I love most about Wynn is his eyebrows. They give him a sinister look that no grimace can accomplish. I wonder if the makeup department fashioned Burns’ eyebrows that way to make him appear so devilishly evil.

Finally! A Winona (Natalie Zea) sighting. I thought the poor woman was just a figment of my imagination. “The point is, I’m gonna be here for you and the baby.” Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) has good intentions, but do you think he can really be what Winona needs? She’s back (for all of two seconds!), and Arlo’s (Raymond J. Barry) out from behind bars. What gives? He’s got something working for himself but, man, there’s more surrounding this Drew Thompson disappearance than anyone realizes. And though Barry is only featured a short time in “Kin,” he makes quite an impression with his facial expressions. It’s the mark of a great actor when he doesn’t have many lines but can still get his point across. Arlo doesn’t say anything to Raylan, but he makes his feelings known with a cutting eye and knowing smirk. Oh yeah, Arlo thinks he’s got one up on Raylan, but he doesn’t know his son the way he thinks he does.

I love the addition of Patton Oswalt to the cast. He brings a bit of dry humor to scenes that probably wouldn’t be considered funny. It’s not just Constable Sweeney’s thrown together appearance, but the things he says: “Unless they ate him. You… Raylan, you know they do that.” His comment about the hill people in Harlan County floors me. He looks so serious when he says it too.

I can't figure out if this is a kennel or something worse. Not really a place for a heart to heart, is it?

Raylan and Boyd (Walton Goggins) finally make a connection. While it may not be the most comfortable way they would have imagined, they do spend some quality time chatting. I’ve been waiting for this so I can’t tell you how excited I was to finally see them onscreen together. The chemistry between Goggins and Olyphant is amazing. The two converse like friends but with an underlying enmity. Now, why do I feel like Raylan and Boyd are embarking on a wild goose chase? And not only that, if they worked together, they’d get somewhere faster. Right now, they’re chasing their tails, getting held at gunpoint, and making assumptions.

Funny lines:

Art (Nick Searcy): “Mr. Vasquez here brought your daddy in to make a deal with him.”

Raylan: “What’s he want, free cable?”

**

Boyd to Colt (Ron Eldard): “The next time I reach out to you—I don’t care if it’s a smiley face—you text me back.”

**

Bob: “Yeah, I got her.”

Raylan: “Good.”

Bob: “She tried to run off; she didn’t get too far with that boot on.”

Raylan: “Yeah, lucky you stabbed her last time; thinking ahead.”

**

Raylan takes Josiah for a ride, cuffed to his vehicle and running walking alongside it:

Josiah Kearn (Gerald McRaney): “You can’t do this.”

Raylan: “Sure I can; long as I got gas.”

**

Boyd to Raylan about his hill country blood: “I’d whistle the theme song to Deliverance if I thought you had a better sense of humor.”

**

After cuffing Boyd to a tree, Raylan says: “You talking ‘bout, no sense of humor. This is funny. I know I’m laughing.”

**

Boyd: “I’ve come to a conclusion. I don’t like you, Raylan.”

Raylan: “Never liked you much neither, Boyd.”

**

I didn't forget about Johnny. He better hope Boyd doesn't figure out what he's got planned.

So the chase continues and with Boyd being added to the race. Who will find Drew Thompson first? And what “hill” is he on? Surely it couldn’t be a Capitol hill, would it? Raylan has a lot riding on this and I think he’ll do whatever it takes to get to Drew first. Should make for an interesting case, at least.
