Bet You Didn’t Guess It Would Be Elena. Review: The Vampire Diaries “The Killer”

Air Date: Thursday, November 8, 2012 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“Anybody gets in my way, anybody… they’re dead.” – Connor

While I knew the “hunter” was going to be a problem, I didn’t realize just how much of a threat he would pose. Wanted kept alive by one vamp, loathed by others; where do you think the mysterious vampire hunter will end up? “The Killer” surprised me with its unpredictable outcome and witty writing, providing quite the enjoyable viewing experience.

Observations and thoughts:

I think I may be hatin’ on the day rings. I kind of want to see these vampires deal with daily obstacles—like the sun. How much more exciting would an episode of The Vampire Diaries be if, say, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) couldn’t come to the rescue because he can’t go out in the daytime? I just feel these vampires have it easy. They don’t fear anything because they don’t have to worry about things like sunlight, and I’d like to see that change.

Maybe now Elena will step out from behind Stefan and do her own thing.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) hates being a vampire and Stefan (Paul Wesley) makes it his goal to help her assimilate into the vampiric lifestyle, or find a cure. “I can give her her life back.” So now that she’s taken another step toward being a true vampire, how will it change her? Will she become more like Damon or will she go gently into that good night with Stefan? I’m guessing the writers will take Elena the easy route and have Stefan guide her through whatever comes next. That should be interesting considering Elena is pissed off at Stefan and I don’t see reconciliation in the near future.

Connor (Todd Williams) decides to go on a vampire killing rampage. He’s pissed off, wants answers about who he is, and believes completing his tattoo will help. Though I like the character, Williams might be overacting just a bit (he needs to tone down the enraged-vampire-hunter-thing a bit to make me believe him). Playing Connor with a cool and calm demeanor would have been much more menacing. Oh well. Connor’s mission accounts for most of the plot during “The Killer” and unexpectedly keeps my attention. Knowing one of the Salvatore brothers would save the day, but not knowing which one, came as quite a shock to me. I like that the writers are sending Stefan on a new tangent. Pulling him out of his Emo phase is refreshing and I hope they keep it up.

Do you think Caroline is regretting taking Klaus up on his offer to be with him? LOL!

Isn’t it interesting how Klaus (Joseph Morgan) can call the shots from halfway around the world? “Tell one soul and I will throw the hunter’s sword in the Mediterranean and we can end this quest right now.” He’s not as scary as he first was since he’s been brought down a notch or two (being killed would do that to anyone), but he’s still formidable enough to hold sway over those he needs for his dastardly plans. And I know I’m not the only one wondering what’s going to happen when he gets back and discovers his “map” is nowhere to be found. That reveals quite a bit of a dilemma for Klaus and a few other characters. Will anyone tell him what happened to Connor? Will Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) step forward and offer up his assistance now that he’s proven to be more than just a “potential” hunter?

April (guest star Grace Phipps) is a nice addition to the show’s dynamic. She seems kind of lost in the sauce, though I guess that’s because she gets compelled every five minutes. I’m glad she’s been given a reprieve because I was beginning to feel bad for the poor girl. Then there’s the possible love triangle she might be caught in. Between Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy, I’m not sure who she’s going to lean toward more, but I’m guessing since Rebekah’s (Clair Holt) out of the picture for a while, Matt might catch her eye if Jeremy isn’t receptive to her feelings. It seems April is the only person left who cares about Rebekah. Do you think she’ll ever find out what happened to her?

What does Professor Shane have in mind for Bonnie?

And last but not least, what is going on with Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Professor Shane (David Alpay)? He’s trying to help her regain her confidence so she can use her powers again, but why? What’s in it for him, and will she see he’s not just being nice to be nice? Whatever’s going on, there seems to be some chemistry between the two. I’m curious to see where this storyline goes.

Memorable and Funny lines:

Stefan: “No matter what Klaus asks, no matter what lies I have to tell or secrets I have to keep, I’ll do it. No matter what it takes.”

**

Stefan: “I trust Damon a hell of a lot more than I trust you.”

Klaus: “And I trust no one, which is why my sister is lying daggered in a box.”

**

Damon to Elena about her “shame spiral”: “Newbie vampire remorse. It’s worse than a hangover.”

**

I enjoyed “The Killer.” I might even say I loved it. The surprising reaction Elena has to her first kill is portrayed excellently by Dobrev. I typically dislike the way Elena is depicted, but Dobrev does something to change my mind about Elena’s burgeoning strength. Her emotions were real; her disappointment in herself was so palpable. How will the gang deal when Katharine shows up? Will Katharine greet Elena with open arms? Now that, I’m dying to see.
