And the Nominee Is …

And the Nominee Is ... 1Just what we need – another awards show. The Broadcast Journalist Critics Choice Awards has branched out with its first ever Critics Choice Television Awards to be held in Los Angeles on Monday, June 20th. Given that this awards show has some unusual nominees and categories, I’m anxious to see it.

Among those unusual shows up for Best Drama Series are Fringe and The Walking Dead. Both shows have a cult-like following so it’s nice to see them being recognized for the quality tv they give us each week. The complete list of shows in this category includes Boardwalk Empire (HBO), Dexter (Showtime), Friday Night Lights (DirecTV), Fringe (Fox), Game of Thrones (HBO), The Good Wife (CBS), Justified (FX), The Killing (AMC), Mad Men (AMC) and The Walking Dead (AMC). My money’s on Justified.

As to the comedies receiving nods, that category also had some atypical nominees mixed in with the usual suspects – Louis and Archer. I don’t watch either, mainly because (1) I really don’t care for Louis C.K.’s brand of humor, and (2) I just don’t have the time to watch Archer. I don’t think it really matters though, because Modern Family is sure to blow the competition out of the water.

Along with scripted shows, unscripted shows are being recognized as well. There are three categories: Best Talk Show, Best Reality Series, and Best Reality Competiton Series, as well as Best Host for each category.

Following is a complete list of all categories and their nominees, along with my pick in each.

According to criticschoice.com:

ABC led all broadcast networks with 16 nominations, while NBC had 12. AMC and FX led the cable networks with nine nominations each.

The inaugural Critics Choice Television Awards will be streamed exclusively live on VH1.com on June 20. The website  also will make select footage available for on-demand viewing following the star-studded event.

According to the BTJA, VH1.com also will feature celebrity interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and give fans a chance to interact with celebrities backstage through its “fan cam” stream.

In addition, ReelzChannel — available in more than 58 million homes through cable and satellite providers — will broadcast the CCTAs, starting June 22 at 8 p.m. ET, repeat the show at 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. ET, and rebroadcast it throughout the week.

The CCTAs will be executive-produced by Bob Bain for Bob Bain Productions.

The newly formed BTJA is a partner organization of the BFCA. The BTJA includes TV, radio and Internet journalists who cover television on a regular basis. The CCTAs honor programs and performances that aired between June 1, 2010, and May 31, 2011.

So tell me, do you agree or disagree with my choices? Let’s discuss.
