The OriginalsSeason 1, Episode 14

Air Date: Thursday, February 25, 2014, 8/7c on The CW.

RATING:

“We did something, Rebekah and I.” – Marcel

The Originals has taken the witch storyline and run with it. I’m really impressed with the various ways the writers have explored the background of the witches who have been hurt by the Original family. We’re seeing the various ways the witches’ abilities can be used, and their obvious shortcomings (poor things are so trusting). “Long Way Back from Hell” is yet another foray into the witchy ways of those who inhabit the supernatural community of New Orleans.

Observations and thoughts:

What You Won’t Do For Love

Rebekah just thinks she's going crazy.

Rebekah just thinks she’s going crazy.

Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) have a more complicated history than I realized. The writers delve further into their love story, showing us the truth of what lies behind the lingering glances between the two. There is a love there that knows no bounds. I enjoy the peek into the past when it comes to Rebekah. I almost feel like we don’t know enough about the younger Mikaelson sibling because she’s often overlooked in lieu of her brothers. One brother considers her a nuisance while the other thinks she needs constant protection. But is it possible Rebekah may be more trouble than she’s worth?

Sibling Rivalry

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) have had their difficulties yet they overlook them, in most instances. I often question why the two don’t rip one another limb from limb when in each other’s presence. It’s a wonder the brothers aren’t fighting over Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). I know Klaus doesn’t want her in a romantic sense but he had to be attracted to her at one point *cough* ‘cause she is pregnant *cough*. Why throw away the potential for a healthy relationship with the mother of his child? Is he staying out of Elijah’s way because the older sibling is the better man? Or is Klaus pushing Hayley off onto Elijah because he can? We haven’t been given much insight into the how’s and why’s of this current situation. It’ll be interesting to find out how this all works out. Come on, writers give us something good!

Random thoughts:

Who's that hiding in someone else's body?

Who’s that hiding in someone else’s body?

How is it that Celeste/Sabine (Shannon Kane) can hop from body to body? I hope we get to see more of her past as well. I’d love to know about the other lives she’s lived over the centuries. She’s an immortal without having to be a creature of the night.

I also find it interesting that Elijah seems to find Celeste in every carnation she inhabits. Coincidence? I think not.

Memorable lines:

Rebekah gives a heartfelt speech about her feelings toward Marcel.

Rebekah to Marcel: “I want to wake up with you in our home, in the bed that we share; I want to walk down the street with you by my side so that everyone knows that you are mine and I am yours. I don’t want to be afraid of what my brother will do to me for loving you.”

**

Rebekah to Genevieve, begging her to stop a spell she’s started: “I risked tearing our family apart for my own selfish happiness.”

**

Hayley to Sabine after saying hello to the back of her head with a heavy object: “Hey there, witch bitch. You and I are gonna have a little chat.”

**

See, Rebekah knows how to help others. She's not selfish. Ha!

See, Rebekah knows how to help others. She’s not selfish. Ha!

A few action scenes thrown into “Long Way Back from Hell” add to the awesomeness of the hour. I’m looking forward to seeing where all of the treachery and betrayal takes the Original family. The three siblings just can’t seem to stop hurting one another. Drop me a line in the comments below if you want to discuss the episode, or hit me up on Twitter @ellemoe with your thoughts.
