Round table interviews with Cast/EPs of Lucifer

WARNING: If you haven’t kept up with Lucifer, there are some spoilers about what happened in the season one finale.

Let me start off by saying one of the biggest highlights of this year’s Comic-Con was seeing Tom Ellis hold my mini-microphone during our round table interviews. Another huge moment was being able to get a photograph with him…swoon! Not to diminish the other amazing celeb photos I got, but he is Lucifer after all. I digress.

During the round table style interviews, I spoke with new cast members Aimee Garcia who plays “forensic scientist” Ella Lopez and Tricia Helfer who will play Lucifer and Amenadiel’s “mum.”  We also spoke with returning cast members Lesley Ann-Brandt who plays Mazikeen, D.B. Woodside who plays Amenadiel, and Tom Ellis who plays Lucifer Morningstar. Executive Producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson were also available to lend insight into what fans can look forward to in the upcoming sophomore season.

Lucifer has become must-see TV for me and I’m thrilled it will be back for what seems to be shaping up as an epic sophomore season. I mean, come on; with the addition of Tricia Helfer as Lucifer (Ellis) and Amenadiel’s (D.B. Woodside) “mum,” how could it not be? There is also another new character this season, a new forensic scientist, which may present a challenge to Lucifer in many ways.

First up is Aimee Garcia who plays a new character Ella Lopez this season. During the interview, she gives us background on her character Ella – where she comes from and who she is – and also the dichotomy of Ella and Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) relationship in terms of the contradictions. Ella is a woman of faith and believes in God, whereas Lucifer has “daddy issues” with God. Garcia stole a little piece of my heart in this press room. Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious. Her dance moves might need a little work, but she was chair dancing, so I’ll wait to see what she’ sreally  got when we see her next season.

Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, in a joint interview, mention that “seeing God” is not completely out of the question, but probably won’t happen this season. God is a “distant figure” on the show. I ask them about the unique relationship between Lucifer and Chloe (Lauren German) in the aspect of Chloe’s effect on Lucifer – she makes him vulnerable in more ways than one.

Lesley Ann-Brandt talks about the budding friendship between Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) and her character Mazikeen. Brandt also touches on the fact there may be continued animosity with Chloe. I think Chloe is slightly unaware of Maz’s dislike for her to which Brandt replies that Chloe thinks “she’s as loony as Lucifer” and that she some “ninja bartender.”

D.B. Woodside said he loves the physicality of his character Amenadiel. Woodside said of his previous roles of playing characters wearing suits and ties, “If you know anything about me, that’s the farthest thing from my own personality.”  Woodside commented that his character Amenadiel and Lucifer have worked through most of their issues, but there is always that sibling rivalry present. There’s a funny moment when another journalist asks Woodside about his “fictional or real” mommy issues.

Tom Ellis and Tricia Helfer, in a joint interview, talk about Lucifer’s fear of his “mum” returning. And he points out an interesting fact – “we don’t know what she looks like.” Hmm… the mother of Satan has returned to Earth and no one knows what she looks like…yeah, that’s not going to cause any problems. Ellis talks about the magnitude of playing such iconic/historic/biblical figures. He says, “humanizing the characters…to make it relatable to people,” is how he approached playing Lucifer.

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
